As a Software Engineer at Applied Materials, you’ll dive deep into ground-breaking technologies—like machine learning and AI—to craft novel software solutions that solve our customers’ high-value problems. Our Software Engineers are responsible for designing, prototyping, developing, and debugging software solutions for semiconductor equipment components and devices to ensure quality and functionality. You'll develop software documentation and test procedures, troubleshoot software problems, and communicate with internal customers to understand project requirements. As part of our team, you'll contribute your expertise in intricate systems, deciphering code, and anticipating software behaviors to ensure Applied remains the leader in the semiconductor and display sectors.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Software Architect for our next generation products infrastructure. This role requires a unique blend of strategic thinking, technical expertise, and leadership. You will drive architectural excellence, ensure alignment with business goals, and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration.
You'll lead complex, cross-organization common solutions across multiple systems and teams, while staying close to the code and ensuring decisions are grounded in real-world implementation.
You'll partner with senior engineers, architects and product across domains to solve high-impact problems and align the organization around key architectural principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Architectural Vision:
Define and communicate the architectural vision and strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and future business needs.
- Big Picture & Deep Dive:
Maintain a holistic view of the system architecture while being able to deep dive into technical details when necessary to resolve complex issues or guide the team.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, engineering, field, and system engineers) to understand requirements, challenge assumptions, and deliver breakthrough solutions.
- Technical Excellence:
Oversee the design and implementation of robust, scalable, and maintainable software architectures. Guide technology selection, evaluation, and integration of open-source/commercial solutions.
- Process Improvement:
Lead technical processes such as code/design reviews, technical debt management, and innovation backlog. Establish and promote best practices in software development and DevOps.
- Roadmap & Standards:
Establish architectural roadmaps, standards, and patterns. Ensure consistent application across projects and teams.
- Hands-On Leadership:
Remain hands-on as needed, supporting teams in troubleshooting, prototyping, and complex problem-solving.
- Continuous Learning:
Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices. Educate and guide the team and broader organization.
Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 7 years in hands-on development (Java, C#, Python, or similar) and 5+ years as architect/tech lead.
- Deep knowledge of software architecture principles, including security, scalability, maintainability, and volatility.
- Experience deploying production-grade solutions in both cloud and non-cloud environments.
- Strong background in integrating open-source and commercial solutions into holistic architectures.
- Familiarity with modern DevOps practices and CI/CD processes.
- Experience with data management, analytics, or big data systems is a plus.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to mentor, coach, and develop technical talent.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with machine learning, big data, or deep learning solution deployment (not algorithm development).
- Experience with distributed systems, containers, and cloud technologies.
- Hands-on experience in leveraging Generative AI (GenAI) coding agents for software development tasks and/or developing applications leveraging GenAI.
- Data-driven mindset with the ability to articulate technical and business value.
