
Environment Construction Engineer, AWS Data Center Environment
About the role
The EMEA Environmental Team seeks an experienced Environmental Engineer to provide environmental oversight for data center construction projects across the EMEA Region. This individual will work closely with the Global Construction Program Lead to develop and implement program requirements, conduct risk assessments, and ensure environmental compliance throughout the construction lifecycle from design through to Facilities Handover.

Key job responsibilities

Construction Environmental Oversight
Provide on-site assessment and oversight of construction environmental risks for AWS data center projects in the EMEA region. Complete Construction Environmental Risk Forms during pre-design to identify high-risk aspects. Conduct environmental inspections using standardized checklists at AWS permitted/owned sites during pre-PFHO construction. Monitor General Contractor performance with permit conditions, Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs), and environmental regulations. Review and approve CEMPs submitted by contractors. -
Compliance & Risk Management
Work with Construction teams and local Regional Environmental Engineers to ensure compliance with environmental regulatory requirements. Manage environmental incidents and non-compliances, coordinating responses with regulatory agencies as needed. Provide technical support to construction teams on environmental matters. -
Incident Management & Continuous Improvement
Participate in incident investigations and corrective action development. Ensure Root Cause Analyses and Corrections of Errors are completed on time. Verify that recommendations are implemented by construction teams. Proactively identify and resolve issues to prevent incidents and drive improvements across the Spain portfolio. -
Collaboration & Documentation
Collaborate with Construction Managers, General Contractors, environmental consultants, and cross-functional teams including AWS Environmental Legal, Infra Ops, and Design Engineering. Review design changes that may impact environmental compliance. Develop local documentation, prepare regulatory reports, and track environmental metrics and program performance.

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in science or equivalent
- Experience developing and implementing environmental compliance programs including regulated waste, water, and air regulations in accordance with applicable laws
- Experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory, and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations and applications, EIAs and water discharge requirements
- Applied knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, and standards related to areas such as air quality, water quality, waste management, and hazardous materials
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent
- Experience in construction management or construction program management of large, complex projects involving large-scale mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plants
- Experience developing solutions and executing plans on complex projects
- Experience using data and metrics to back up assumptions and implement effective solutions
- Experience in construction
