Key job responsibilities
As a Senior MDE - Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for driving world class manufacturing automation solutions to scale our operations globally. This will involve innovating automation solutions for assembly processes providing mechanical hardware design and development leadership for concept development, hardware design, development, explore cutting edge technologies, and design equipment to realize process automation. You will be a key member of the development team and will be the main interface between the Hardware and local and offshore Operations teams within Lab126 and our OEM partners. The right candidate will possess solid understanding of technical principles and concepts in mechanical or mechatronics engineering. The candidate will have demonstrated experience leading complex design/engineering projects, and will have a well-rounded technical background in complex inter-disciplinary systems.
A day in the life
Primary responsibilities include:
1. Innovate, design and develop cost effective assembly automation solutions. This will involve designing (3D CAD) of automation workcell layout.
2. Define, expand, and explore the design space for complex, multidisciplinary robotics and automation problems.
3. Derive functional and design requirements from Product Requirements Document, identify and analyze the cross-functional tradeoffs between design alternatives, including impact on performance, schedule, cost, risk, complexity, and scale.
4. Work with an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production; including design, prototyping, validation, testing, and certification.
5. Coordinate with all other cross-functions to ensure project success.
6. Possess a thorough understanding of technical principles and concepts in mechanical engineering.
7. Provide Mechanical Engineering leadership, conduct experiments, simulations, data collection, perform system and sub-system level testing. Identify design choices to ensure our products are safe, reliable, and usable, and can be deployed and supported at Amazon scale.
8. Writing and developing functional specifications, design verification plans, evaluations, test procedures, FMEA documents.
About the team
You will be working with highly skilled individuals with varying skills and background from China and US. Partner teams will look to you to solve complex issues using automation and coming up with new ways to improve the overall product design to delight our customers
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- Experience with written and verbal communication and presentation
- 15+ yrs of experience in hardware solutions for automation, robotics, or similar area.
- Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
- Demonstrated ability to gain deep understanding of the business and end user needs quickly, and to proficiently translate needs into the correct technology solution.
- Able to provide the customer and company-wide perspective to detailed technical decisions.
- Fluent in 3D CAD (Solidworks), CAE
- Manufacturing knowledge and relevant work experience in Supplier or Product Quality or Product Reliability.
- Experience with quality concepts/tools/methods such as 8D, DOE, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Measurement Systems Analysis, etc.
- Demonstrated experience implementing quality engineering principles through development programs
- Experience in qualifying assembly automation machines FAT, SAT
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent, or MS degree
- Technical expertise in at least one domain: Industrial Automation, Robotics, Human Centered Design
- Demonstrated experience incubating and commercializing new technology, working closely with research scientists and technical teams from idea generation through implementation.
- Proficiency with FMEA, GD&T, CAD and CFD-based analysis tools.
- Demonstrated understanding of engineering documentation, electrical and mechanical diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
- Strong expertise in Mechanical 2D/3D structure design, tooling design or motor control system, gear box design and tolerance analysis.
