The Data Center Operations Manager leads a team of front line server engineers providing critical server and network maintenance in AWS data centers. You and your team provide 24/7 front line support, act as first responders to incidents, and support the development and implementation of improvements to maintenance procedures and practices. Data Center Managers must be effective people leaders able to hire, grow, and evaluate talent on an ongoing basis to meet business needs in a rapidly evolving technical environment. You must be able to work independently to manage your team effectively and be able to determine when it is necessary to escalate challenges. Work prioritization, organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to react quickly are critical to being successful.

A day in the life
Your primary focus is leading a data center team that maintains critical infrastructure for cloud services. Morning starts with safety-focused team standups and site walks to connect with your technicians. You'll spend time mentoring team members, reviewing operational metrics, and collaborating with facilities, engineering, and vendor teams to ensure smooth operations. Beyond routine activities, you'll tackle interesting technical challenges - from capacity planning to emergency response. You might find yourself brainstorming process improvements with your team, participating in cross-site initiatives, or working with stakeholders to implement new technologies. Each day offers unique opportunities to develop your people while maintaining world-class infrastructure operations.

About the team
The Infrastructure Operations team handles the various physical layers for AWS data centers, including the infrastructure and on-site operations. We are a team of professionals and engineers, actively working in positions ranging from the installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of servers and network equipment, to facility operations, managing power and air-conditioning systems, to risk management, project management, security, logistics and inventory control. We are the team who keeps the data centers up and running 24/7, the backbone of AWS.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to build, sustain partnership across multiple teams
  • Proficient in Japanese and conversational level English
  • 2+ years of team management experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Experience or basic understanding of how to work adhering to policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Both verbal and reading/writing proficiency in Japanese (equivalent to JLPT N2) and in English (equivalent to TOEIC 550 or at a level to handle daily tasks in English)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in supporting large-scale infrastructure
  • Project Management certification (PMP, Prince2, ITILv2, BICSI).
