About the role

Position Overview

The Assistant Grocery Manager supports the Grocery Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Grocery Department. This role ensures strong in-stock conditions, effective merchandising, and excellent customer service while helping drive sales, control expenses, and develop team performance.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations

  • Support daily grocery department operations and execution
  • Ensure shelves are stocked, faced, and properly merchandised
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and food safety standards
  • Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and promotional displays

Team Support & Development

  • Assist in training and developing grocery associates
  • Provide day-to-day direction, coaching, and support
  • Help manage schedules to meet labor goals and business needs
  • Promote accountability and a positive team environment

Customer Service

  • Deliver fast, friendly, and helpful service to customers
  • Support a strong customer-first culture within the department
  • Assist in resolving customer issues promptly and professionally

Inventory & Merchandising

  • Assist with ordering, receiving, and inventory control
  • Maintain proper product rotation and backroom organization
  • Monitor out-of-stocks, shrink, and product quality
  • Execute merchandising plans and ad features

Financial Performance

  • Support department sales and profitability goals
  • Assist in controlling labor, shrink, and expenses
  • Monitor key performance indicators and help drive improvements

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all food safety and sanitation standards
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Maintain a safe environment for customers and team members

Qualifications

  • Previous grocery or retail experience preferred
  • Leadership or supervisory experience a plus
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic knowledge of inventory and merchandising practices

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and stocking
  • Flexible schedule including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays
