Summary:
The responsibilities of a Product Lead IT (PLIT) can vary from one product to another depending on the nature and setup of the product. However, there are many common factors. Each PLIT owns all the responsibilities associated with developing their product. Still, they need to collaborate with their counterparts on BU/FU side as well as the product team and delegate the workload according to the team needs. Together with their counterparts on BU/FU side, PLIT ensures that quality products are delivered on time and, most importantly, that the product creates value for our business. The PLIT role is empowered to make decisions about their product. Therefore, together with the Product Lead BU (if
available), the PLIT is clarifying the product backlog items and deciding which items to do. They, PLIT and PLBU, must make all the decisions about the product by knowing the business needs and expectations. In addition to the significant delivery responsibilities, the PLIT is also expected to establish a strong network and relationships, not only internally within the team, but also with the broader customer, stakeholder, and management groups relevant to their product. The PLIT must have a clear understanding of the competition and future trends of the domain or product and the solutions being developed.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- In alignment and together with their counterpart on BU/FU side the PLIT:
- Set the goals and create the product vision and documentation.
- Are responsible for the implementation strategy: architecture, quality, sustainability, and maintainability.
- Maintain the product backlog, managing requirements and tasks that need to be done by the team.
- Prioritize the work according to the OKRs of the product to ensure the product vision is met.
- Develop a release plan and product roadmap and ensure that everyone involved has a common understanding of the product development.
- Are responsible for providing the best return on investment of their product and negotiating financial targets and expected key results for the product.
- Are responsible for all economic and financial decision making during the development of a release and/or version of the product.
- Are able and empowered to adjust time, scope, and quality according to the business needs or for needed technical developments within the approved budget. Cost and benefit should be a key factor to determine the order of the work.
- Motivate the team and seek feedback. They coordinate all questions of the team and listen to suggestions about adding, deleting, changing, or improving the product. They represent the customer, user, and strategic stakeholders of the product to the team.
- Have disciplinary responsibility for the Product Team IT members.
- Define the objectives and key results needed to realize the vision of the product and to pay for the objectives of the product group.
- Define suitable business KPIs to measure the benefit/value of the product. Together with the Product Lead BU they track and report financial KPIs to the product group level.
- Keep an eye on all aspects of the product, the Minimum Viable Product (MVP), positive ROI results, and the time to market.
- Have to find the right balance between necessary technical tasks (e.g., Security, Refactoring or Documentation) and feature developments.
- Exchange with other PLITs and agree on common methods. As many products are dependent on other products, the PLIT is also constantly in alignment with other PLITs in terms of product vision, product strategy, and product roadmap.
- Constantly monitor the market and observe what our competitors do in the IT field concerning the product. The PLIT should look at products and be able to tell what is good, what is inspiring, and what can be improved.
- Info Sec focus: Compliance with legal requirements and contractual customer specifications identify, assess, and manage risks associated with the products, develop, and implement action plans for risk mitigation. Ensure compliance of the managed products with company policies (IMS and ISMS).
