Scientist
About the role
The Opportunity
A critical part of achieving our vision is working with fantastic people. We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented Scientist to join our Immunobiology team, whose goal is to deliver new insights into the biology and mechanisms of immunological disease, and to identify valid targets for therapeutic intervention.
This role is designed for someone who is excited about working in a small, dynamic team; who is always keen to get involved in all aspects of immunobiology and drug discovery research; and who brings genuine team spirit to everything they do. It is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to solidify their career within an industry laboratory research environment, working on innovative projects while continuously developing new skills.
The initial focus of the successful candidate will be to develop and use assays, including complex in vitro models, to answer focused biological questions. You will work independently on primary cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISA, imaging and a range of assay techniques, with appropriate guidance from senior team members.
You will be a practical, organised and detail-oriented experimentalist who enjoys the full arc of research, from experimental design through to interpretation, and who is genuinely excited by novel biology.
Room to Grow
At DJS, we want to foster innovative scientists performing cutting-edge science. The successful candidate will have the space to develop as an increasingly independent experimentalist, with exposure to scientists from a wide range of backgrounds, including bioinformaticians, clinical scientists, pathologists and drug discovery experts, as well as colleagues in our on-site Novel Therapeutics group in Oxford.
You will work closely with Abb Vie R&D colleagues, gaining real experience in cross-border collaboration, with opportunities to travel to Abb Vie's US research sites and network with scientists across different disease areas and disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Bringing energy, enthusiasm and positivity to the company
- Maintenance of cell cultures, including advanced primary cells
- Execution of techniques such as flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy and ELISA
- Troubleshooting and running co-cultures and complex in vitro model systems
- Working as a key member of the Oxford Immunobiology team, collaborating across projects to advance our therapeutic programs
- Autonomously performing critical laboratory experiments, interpreting data and driving the next series of experiments and strategic decisions within the team
- Keeping up to date with developments in the literature, particularly around technical aspects of drug discovery technologies
- Contributing to day-to-day laboratory management, including maintaining a safe, clean working environment and re-ordering consumables
- Establishing and maintaining quality sample archives
- Gathering, analysing and presenting data to both the Oxford team and US-based colleagues
- Critical and impartial review of self and peer-generated laboratory data
- Maintenance of thorough and accurate laboratory experimental records
What We Are Looking For Required:
-
A degree in Immunology or a related life sciences field; a PhD or equivalent level of laboratory experience is preferred
-
Enthusiasm for and commitment to drug discovery and translational research
-
A passion for in vitro immunology and understanding novel biology
-
Proven hands-on experience in:
-
Human primary cell culture and in vitro or ex vivo assays
-
Cell biology techniques including flow cytometry, ELISA (plate or bead-based) and fluorescence microscopy
-
Some previous experience in basic immunological techniques is essential
Desirable:
- Experience with complex in vitro model systems such as organ-on-a-chip or organoids
- Experience working with myeloid cells and differentiation assays
- Fluorescent imaging analysis and quantification (e.g. Molecular Devices In Carta)
- Exposure to omics-based approaches such as RNA-seq
Across everything you do, you will demonstrate:
- Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- A problem-solving mindset and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
- Solid IT skills and a flexible, goal-oriented approach
