Your Role and Responsibilities
In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead a team of Research and Development (R&D) employees and support them in achieving the agreed R&D targets. Each day, you will coach and develop the team. You will showcase your expertise by helping in managing technologies, platforms, and Intellectual Property. You will oversee the full scope of steering system development while working closely with both internal teams and external customers. This role will be located in Vuosaari, Helsinki.
You will be mainly accountable for:

Managing the development of Azipod® technology initiatives from concept to completion, ensuring high technical quality, innovation, and adherence to timelines and budgets.

Leading the development of marine steering systems across mechanical, electrical, and automation disciplines.

Acting as the team leader with responsibility for a team of approximately 10 experts.

Ensuring appropriate resourcing for R&D development projects.

Planning and coordinating development tasks with your team and project managers.

Providing technical guidance for project execution, warranty, and service teams.

Developing and acquiring competencies needed for future products and systems.

Communicating plans and technical solutions to stakeholders, including customers.

Qualifications for the Role

B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering or naval architecture.

Solid experience in R&D or technical innovation within the marine, propulsion, or heavy industries.

Demonstrable leadership experience, especially among multidisciplinary teams of technical experts.

Solid background in complex R&D projects requiring detailed planning, budgeting, and follow-up.

Strong communication skills and ability to represent ABB in customer meetings.

A passion for working with others, and in coaching your team to help them excel.

Strong communication ability in English; Finnish is considered a benefit.
