This role sits within ABB's Robotics business, a leading global robotics company. We're entering an exciting new chapter as we've announced the plan for Soft Bank Group to acquire ABB Robotics. Soft Bank is a globally recognized technology group and investor/operator focused on AI, robotics, and next-generation computing. By joining us now, you'll be part of a pioneering team shaping the future of robotics—working alongside world-class experts in a fast-moving, innovation-driven environment.

Reports to: Manager of research team

Responsibilities

  • Research and development of innovative concepts and enabling technology for industrial robot and its applications in factory automation
  • Advanced system engineering and algorithm design for related areas, such as machine vision, infrastructure sensing, machine learning, and LLM
  • Prototyping and testing of new product/solution concepts
  • Cooperation with ABB Robotics Division in China and worldwide for requirement analysis, technology transfer, and evaluation of market attractiveness of new concepts/solutions
  • Scouting and tracking trends of market and emerging technologies to draw the strategic technology roadmap in industrial robot and its applications
  • Collaboration with leading academic institutions and universities in China, and jointly performing research projects

Challenges

  • Good understanding of the key problems and technical trends of robot applications

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Advanced technical degree (M.S., ideally Ph.D) in robotics, mechatronics, automation, computer science, motion control, electrical engineering, imaging, machine learning or related field
  • Hands-on experience in VLM, VLA or robot learning is a plus
  • Strong knowledge in robotics and understanding of its industrial applications
  • International experience is a plus
  • Passion for innovation, problem solving and open mindedness with insights into new technologies, driving changes
  • Initiative and ability to lead research projects and implementation of research results in industrial environment
  • Good communication and presentation skills in English
  • Team player with high level of initiative for global cooperation and knowledge-sharing
