This position reports to:
Pharma Engineering Manager:
__
Your role and responsibilities
As a Principal Project Engineer in ABB Life Science, you will play a key role in shaping how advanced pharmaceutical automation production systems are designed, automated, and delivered. You will work at the intersection of process, automation, and compliance, helping our customers translate complex production requirements into robust, future‑proof automation solutions based on ABB 800xA.
You bring deep experience within pharma production processes (e.g. fermentation, recovery, purification) and hands‑on expertise with control systems such as DeltaV, Sattline, or ABB 800xA.
In this role, you will act as the overall technical lead on pharmaceutical and life science automation projects, involved from early design through commissioning and handover. You will translate production and process requirements into compliant automation solutions, ensuring GMP, quality, documentation, and testing standards are met. Working closely with customers and project teams, you will guide technical direction while remaining hands‑on where it matters most.
Your responsibilities will include:
-
Set technical direction by acting as design authority, defining automation and engineering philosophies, and approving critical deliverables across complex life science projects.
-
Solve complex engineering challenges, applying fail‑safe and secure‑by‑design principles to deliver compliant, robust, and future‑ready automation solutions.
-
Partner with customers and stakeholders to shape automation solutions, translate complex requirements into clear designs, and ensure technical success throughout the project lifecycle.
-
Lead through expertise and influence, mentoring engineers, promoting design thinking, and fostering strong communities of practice and knowledge sharing.
-
Continuously improve engineering excellence by developing, standardizing, and benchmarking engineering processes, tools, and ways of working.
-
Own technical risk and value creation, proactively managing risks and opportunities, supporting scope changes and claims, and protecting project quality and margins.
-
Bridge engineering and execution, contributing to planning, cost control, RFQs, and technical supplier evaluations across the value chain.
-
Ensure end‑to‑end technical delivery, coordinating manufacturing, testing, commissioning, and service activities to deliver complete, compliant, and high‑quality solutions.
Qualifications for the role
-
Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in automation or engineering roles within regulated industries, preferably pharmaceutical or life sciences.
-
Proven experience as a technical lead or design authority, accountable for automation concepts, architecture, and key technical decisions.
-
Strong understanding of GMP environments, engineering standards (e.g. S88), quality frameworks (e.g. GAMP5), and cybersecurity requirements (e.g. NIS2).
-
Ability to solve complex technical challenges, make sound engineering judgments, and communicate decisions clearly to customers and stakeholders.
-
Experience working closely with customers and multidisciplinary project teams in complex project environments.
-
Solid understanding of pharma production processes and experienced user of SCADA system automation systems (preferred 800xA).
