Service Engineer Power Systems – Maritime & Offshore
About ABB
At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we'll give you what you need to make it happen. It won't always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you'll never run alone. Run what runs the world.
The Role
Reports to: Service Team Leader
Maintain switchboards on a passenger ship in Singapore. Fix a propulsion fault on a naval vessel in Den Helder. Optimize power management systems on an oil tanker in the North Sea. This is your work area: from 100,000 hp main engines to diesel-electric drives with 4 MW Azipods.
About the Position
Power: Switchboards and Electrical Distribution
This is where your focus lies. You maintain and upgrade switchboards, troubleshoot faults and ensure the electrical infrastructure on board keeps running. From simple breaker problems to complex network faults. Your work varies from preventive maintenance to acute troubleshooting. Sometimes it's a quick repair, sometimes you'll spend days analyzing a complex fault in integrated systems. You work independently on location, but always have backup from ABB specialists when you need it.
Responsibilities
- Solve faults: from straightforward to next-level complex, on ships, platforms and sometimes in industrial environments
- Perform maintenance: breakers, switchboards and related systems according to schedule and specifications
- Commission new systems: ensuring precision is essential, working with specialists on larger projects
- Provide support: remote troubleshooting via phone or Teams, or physically on-site with the customer
- Coordinate on-site: work together with fellow engineers, subcontractors and customer personnel – you are the point of contact
- Report: technical reports, work orders and documentation
- Advise: inform customers about maintenance strategy and possible improvements based on what you encounter
Your Team
You'll be part of a team of 20 service engineers, divided across three disciplines. Several colleagues work like you on switchboards and breakers. There are also colleagues specialized in Drives and Automation. You work very independently, but the lines are short: when you have questions or technical puzzles, you quickly find each other.
The operational team (5 coordinators) handles all logistics: from the first customer inquiry to invoicing. Your hotel in Genoa or transport from Houston airport is also arranged. The back office, sales and project teams take care of the rest. On projects, your input is requested – you have the practical knowledge needed to do things right.
What You Bring
- HBO level work and thinking in electrical engineering or mechatronics
- Several years of experience in a technical service role
- Preferably experience with maritime or offshore installations, but not a hard requirement
- You have no problem being away from home for periods – sometimes a few days, sometimes a few weeks
- You take responsibility: on-site you are the expert the customer relies on
- You have your own opinion and dare to voice it – that leads to better solutions
- You combine independence with team spirit
- You speak and write good English – that is your working language
- Dutch is handy but not essential
- Driving license category B
What ABB Offers
Your Technical Development
- Training and certifications in advanced maritime systems
- Access to the knowledge of 105,000 specialists worldwide – if you have a technical problem, there's always someone who knows the answer
- Growth opportunities: from service engineer to specialist, project manager or technical advisor
Practical Arrangements
- Company car – your transport to customers and airport
- Full equipment: laptop and phone
- Foreign allowances on top of your salary: expenses or daily allowance for each day on-site
Your Time
- 40 days off per year (27 vacation + 13 ADV) – after periods away from home you have time to recover
- Full-time (40 hours), but flexibly deployable
- Want extra time off or prefer to earn more? You can convert leave hours into salary
Financial
- Competitive salary commensurate with your experience
- 13th month standard
- Solid pension scheme
- Annual sports allowance (because after weeks on a ship you want to stay fit)
The basics are well arranged, so you can focus on what you do best: solving technical problems.
