23and Me is looking for a quantitative scientist with extensive experience in statistical modeling of human genetics data to join our research team. You will leverage your expertise and work collaboratively with clinical and genetic scientists in order to build risk prediction models from 23and Me’s large-scale genetic and phenotypic datasets, with a focus on developing clinically useful risk prediction models that can be deployed to consumers and clinicians.

With the world’s largest database of more than 11 million research-consented customers, 23and Me is at the forefront of using human genetics to advance biomedical research and transform healthcare. Join our growing team in helping people access, understand, and benefit from the human genome.

Who We Are:

We are a group of individuals passionate about genetic discovery. 23and Me Research Institute is a nonprofit medical research organization that enables people everywhere to access their genetic information, learn about themselves, and participate in the world's largest crowdsourced research initiative. The Institute aims to be the world's most significant contributor to scientific advancement, uniting people with the common goal of improving health and deepening our understanding of DNA — the code of life.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop clinical risk prediction models by integrating genomic data with high-dimensional phenotypic profiles.

  • Leverage machine learning and statistical modeling techniques to advance the state-of-the-art in risk prediction.

  • Work collaboratively with members of Product, Engineering, and Clinical teams to deploy risk models in both clinical and direct-to-consumer settings.

  • Use a variety of non-23and Me datasets to validate model performance.

  • Develop and publish materials that demonstrate the utility of integrating genetics into clinical risk prediction in real-world settings.

  • Regularly present and communicate research to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Represent 23and Me at clinical and scientific conferences.

What You’ll Bring

  • PhD or MD/PhD in Statistics, Statistical Genetics, Computer Science or a related quantitative field.

  • Strong expertise in statistical genetics, demonstrated by prior work experience or excellent publication records.

  • Deep understanding of integrating genetics in a clinical setting, including polygenic risk scores.

  • Research experience using machine-learning and statistical modeling techniques to analyze large-scale human genetics and genomics datasets.

  • Expertise with data analysis, programming, and related concepts in Python, ideally working with packages such as Py Torch and Num Pyro

  • Proven experience writing robust, well-tested code, and collaborating within a shared GitHub repository.

  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic, team-oriented, and fast-paced environment.

Strongly Preferred

  • 1-5 years of postdoctoral/industry experience

  • Bay area location, or willingness to relocate
