Job Description Procurement Manager – Packaging (Must Have: Packaging Materials Expertise)

Location: This is a fully onsite position based at one of two sites.

Site Options: Morrisville, NC or Pittsburgh, PA

Position Summary

Join Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, as a Procurement Manager – Packaging, where deep, hands-on experience with packaging materials is essential. This role is heavily focused on industrial and distribution packaging, including set-up boxes, fiber drums, stretch film, shrink film, void fill, cushioning materials, and packing supplies.

You will lead global category strategies and sourcing initiatives for packaging materials that directly support manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution operations. Success in this role requires a strong working knowledge of packaging specifications, box and drum set-ups, material performance, and supplier capabilities, along with the ability to partner cross-functionally to optimize cost, quality, risk, and supply continuity.

Key Responsibilities Global Category & Strategy Leadership

  • Lead global packaging category initiatives to deliver key performance indicators including cost savings, supplier rationalization, low-cost region sourcing, and supply risk mitigation
  • Develop and execute 3–5 year global sourcing strategies specifically focused on packaging materials and packing supplies, contracting with preferred suppliers that meet operational, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Own category strategy for pac kaging, fiber drums, stretch and shrink films, void fill, cushioning materials, and related consumables

Technical & Packaging Expertise

  • Monitor packaging market intelligence, material trends, resin and paper markets, and supplier innovations to continuously refine category strategies
  • Partner with manufacturing, distribution, quality, and engineering teams to qualify packaging suppliers and packaging formats, ensuring fitness for use and regulatory compliance
  • Analyze supplier performance across packaging categories to drive continuous improvement in quality, service, sustainability, and cost
  • Actively participate in supplier business reviews focused on packaging performance, material optimization, and supply reliability
  • Lead strategic negotiations and manage contracts across global packaging suppliers, materials, and services
  • Provide packaging spend visibility, analytics, and insights to internal stakeholders to support operational and business decision-making

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with operations, quality, technical, finance, and logistics teams to ensure packaging sourcing decisions align with business priorities
  • Establish global packaging category plans and ensure alignment across divisions and regions
  • Lead and facilitate Packaging Savings Kaizen events and ideation programs, targeting material optimization, standardization, and waste reduction

Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or a related technical field. Master’s preferred. Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • Minimum of 7 years of procurement or sourcing experience with significant, hands-on responsibility for packaging materials and packing supplies
  • Demonstrated experience sourcing and managing set-upboxes, fiber drums, stretch/shrink film, void fill, and protective packaging
  • Strong understanding of packaging specifications, supplier capabilities, and packaging performance in manufacturing or distribution environments
  • Experience working in highly regulated industries
  • Proven ability to lead category strategies and negotiate agreements that deliver measurable business value
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams across multiple geographies

Preferred

  • CPSM or equivalent certification
  • Hands-on manufacturing, warehouse, or supply chain experience
  • Experience in life sciences, medical device, or pharmaceutical industries
  • Track record of success in continuous improvement environments with year-over-year results

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to travel up to 25%
