Overview
Are you obsessed with the moment someone is away from the desk - on a train, between meetings, in a factory aisle - and still needs Excel to think with them.
Do you want to build agentic, intelligent experiences that turn Excel on Mobile into a true copilot: understanding intent, taking multi-step action, staying grounded in the workbook, and earning trust every single time?
If so, the Excel Chat team would love to talk to you.
About the Team
Excel Chat is shaping how people work with data through conversation and action. We build the experiences that sit at the intersection of Excel ’s core strengths (calculation, structure, models, analysis) and Copilot’s emerging strengths (reasoning, orchestration, iteration, and help that adapts to context).
We partner deeply across Excel engineering, Copilot, Office design, identity/security/compliance, and Microsoft 365 platform teams to deliver experiences that feel native, fast, and reliable, at global scale.
We’re customer-obsessed, telemetry-driven, and candid about tradeoffs. On mobile, there’s nowhere to hide: latency, clarity, and trust are everything.
About the Position
As a Principal Product Manager for Excel Mobile Agentic Experiences, you will own the product vision and execution for bringing agentic, intelligent workflows to Excel on iOS and Android.
This is not a “chat UI” role. This is about building an *action system - *where users can ask, explore, verify, and apply changes safely inside a workbook, with the agent doing the heavy lifting across multiple steps.
You’ll define what “agentic Excel” means on a small screen: when it should be proactive, when it must stay quiet, how it stays grounded in the sheet, and how it earns user trust with transparency, controls, and predictable behavior.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities:
Product Strategy & Vision
- Define the north star for Excel Mobile as an agentic companion for real work: quick analysis, cleanup, formula creation, charting, modeling, sharing, and decision-making on the go.
- Identify the highest-leverage mobile-first scenarios (voice, camera, share sheet, notifications, widgets, offline/low-connectivity realities) where intelligence feels magical and useful.
- Make the hard calls on what ships vs. what waits—based on customer value, technical readiness, and trust risk.
Agentic Experiences (Core Responsibilities)
- Design and ship multi-step agent flows: Plan → Act → Verify → Explain → Undo.
- Build experiences that can:interpret intent and constraints from the workbook + user context,
- invoke tools (Excel actions) safely,
- show previews and confirmations when needed,
- and leave the workbook in a state the user understands.
- Drive “grounding” patterns: citations to sheet ranges, formula previews, diffs, and clear “what changed” summaries.
- Ensure reliability on mobile constraints: performance, memory, battery, and variable network.
Trust, Safety, and Enterprise Readiness
- Partner with security/compliance to ensure the experience respects tenant controls, data boundaries, and policy requirements.
- Define product guardrails: sensitive data handling, hallucination mitigation, safe defaults, and user controls (undo, revert, apply to copy, etc.).
- Create trust metrics and ship improvements as a first-class roadmap.
Execution, Telemetry, and Experimentation
- Own the roadmap, PRDs, and prioritization across multiple partner teams.
- Drive experimentation strategy (A/Bs, feature flights, cohort analysis) and build a tight telemetry loop.
- Define success metrics such as: task success rate, time-to-value, retention, latency, “undo rate,” user trust signals, and satisfaction/NPS.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Lead across design, engineering, data science, research, marketing, and support - with crisp alignment and real accountability.
- Influence platform investments needed for mobile agentic execution (tooling, orchestration, evaluation, diagnostics).
- Mentor other PMs and raise the bar on product thinking, clarity, and quality.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years experience in product/service/program management or software developmentOR equivalent experience.
- Significant product management experience shipping customer-facing experiences at scale.
- Strong track record leading ambiguous, cross-team initiatives with measurable outcomes.
- Excellent product judgment across UX quality, reliability, and platform tradeoffs.
- Deep comfort with data/telemetry, experimentation, and iterative delivery.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience shipping Copilot/LLM-powered products, agentic workflows, or tool-invocation systems.
- Familiarity with spreadsheets/productivity workflows and enterprise governance requirements.
- Mobile product leadership experience across iOS/Android, including performance-sensitive features.
- Experience defining and operationalizing trust/safety patterns and evaluation frameworks for AI experiences.
This position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
