As a tooling engineer on the Facebook/Oculus tooling team you will help develop tooling & production processes through hands on collaboration with Product Design, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance while playing a crucial role in research, planning, costing, and execution of future products.
Tooling Engineer Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design and development of new plastic injection mold tooling to meet strict part and assembled device requirements
- Lead Design for manufacturing (DFM) and collaborate with product designers to improve the manufacturing feasibility of plastic, rubber and metal parts using your extensive tooling experience as well as industry best practices
- Collaborate with tooling suppliers in the design, manufacturing and qualification of world class tooling, as well as supporting molding process development
- Collaborate with our cross-functional team in the selection of materials to meet performance, dimensional and cosmetic requirements
- Ongoing cooperation with our tooling suppliers to continuously improve tooling designs, tool manufacturing techniques and molding processes based on optimization trials, enhance overall manufacturing efficiency and DOE results to guide informed decisions
- Provide guidance in the selection of machinery and equipment to improve the performance and consistency of our suppliers
- Identify disruptive technologies in all phases of tool design, tool manufacturing and part creation, and work to implement them into mass production
- Experience with a wide range of molding techniques including insert molding, 2 shot molding, metal injection molding, die casting, transfer molding, liquid silicon molding and High pressure forming
- Drive thorough documentation, Process parameters, SOP's, PFMEA, BOMs, cost estimates, schedules, and tooling best practices, lessons learned
- Conducting and updating tooling supplier site visit SWOT and audit reports, tooling health reviews, and technical maturity assessments, tooling trials and qualification reports
- Lead supplier improvement plans (technical coaching, tooling process improvements, inspection rigor, corrective actions)
- Leads root cause failure investigations for complex tooling problems and implements permanent corrective actions
- Mentor and guide engineers in tooling best practices and effective development methodologies
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies that can streamline tooling, processes and improve overall productivity
- Travel (Up to 50%) to vendor sites to help drive tool and part optimization
Minimum Qualifications:
- On the ground factory experience working with overseas vendors
- Bachelors degree in Engineering (Plastics, Materials, Mechanical, Process) or equivalent industry experience
- Minimum of 10+ year's experience in the plastic injection molding industry
- Previous experience with designing and/or manufacturing tooling for high volume, tight tolerance consumer electronics products or similar
- Experience in leading complex development programs and effective communicator with leadership skills
- Experience in applying lean and continuous improvement principles to tooling design and development. Highly detail-oriented, organized, and working across multiple projects simultaneously
- Understanding of SPC, DOE, GD&T principles
- Experience with 3D CAD design software, FEA and mold filling simulation software
- Experience with a variety of commodity and engineering grade thermoplastic and thermoset resins with scientific Injection Molding concepts
- Experience with post molding operations including but not limited to CNC machining, plastic coatings, ultra sonic welding, silk screening and heat staking
- Experience in Lens and Freeform optical parts tooling
- Knowledge in metal part fabrication methods (Metal Injection molding-MIM, die-casting, Thixomolding, stamping, forging)
- Organizational skills and related software experience (Excel, PowerPoint, etc) to allow for project tracking and presentations as needed
- Knowledge of various materials, particularly plastic and elastomeric polymers, and how their properties (shrinkage, flow, cooling rates) influence mold design and part quality

- Ability & experience building cross-functional relationships at all levels of the organization
- Can-do attitude with the ability to drive results, motivate, and instill a sense of urgency in others
- Ability to be in a leadership position and achieve results with minimal supervision
