ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for an Analytics Engineer II to join Khan Academy’s Analytics Engineering (AE) team. You’ll help transform raw product, learning, and operational data into clean, reliable, and well-modeled datasets that power insights across the organization.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design, build, and maintain dbt models that transform raw event- and entity-level data into curated, analytics-ready datasets.

  • Develop, document, and test semantic and reporting layers in Looker (LookML).

  • Partner with Analysts and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure consistent metric definitions and accurate data pipelines.

  • Contribute to data modeling best practices, including naming conventions, incremental strategies, and schema evolution.

  • Implement data quality tests and validation checks to ensure reliability of production datasets.

  • Monitor and troubleshoot data issues, coordinating fixes with Data Infrastructure and Engineering.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 3+ years of deep, warehouse-centric analytics engineering experience..

  • Strong SQL and dbt proficiency (including macros, Jinja, and incremental model strategies).

  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining Looker models (LookML, Explores, derived tables).

  • Familiarity with modern data stacks (e.g., Big Query, Git, and basic CI/CD practices for testing and deploying data models).

  • Understanding of data modeling concepts (SCDs, star schemas, bridge tables).

  • Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Exposure to orchestration tools like Airflow.

  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative development (Git, code review).

Preferred: Experience with Big Query; familiarity with education-technology contexts.

OUR TECH STACK

  • Warehouse: Big Query

  • Transformation: dbt (open-source)

  • BI / Semantic Layer: Looker

  • Orchestration: Airflow

  • Version Control: GitHub

Cultivate learning mindset

We believe in the power of growth for learners and for ourselves. We constantly learn and teach to improve our offerings, ourselves, and our organization. We learn from our mistakes and aren’t afraid to fail. We don't let past failures or successes stop us from taking future bold action and achieving our goals.

Deliver wow

We insist on high standards and deliver delightful, effective end-to-end experiences that our users can rely on. We choose to focus on fewer things — each of which aligns to our ambitious vision — so we can deliver high-quality experiences that accelerate positive measurable learning with our strategic partners.
