Description The Role -
- The Deputy Chief Safety Officer(상무) will serve as a strategic partner to the CSO. The D-CSO role is intended to build strong safety leadership capability within GM in Korea and may be considered for future CSO succession based on demonstrated performance, leadership readiness, and evolving business and organizational needs. The role will also play a pivotal part in shaping and executing GM's safety strategy across Korea operations.
What You'll Do -
- Leadership & Succession: Serve as second-in-command to the CSO and take on delegated leadership responsibilities. The role is structured to support leadership development for potential future opportunities, including possible consideration for the CSO role, based on demonstrated performance and organizational requirements.
- Strategic Safety Execution: Lead implementation of emerging safety strategies (linked to Global). Drive continuous improvement in safety performance metrics and compliance.
- Accountability & Culture: Champion a culture of accountability and ownership for safety across all levels of the organization. Promote fearless reporting of unsafe behaviors, acts or conditions
- Union & Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a primary liaison with Labor Unions on safety-related matters. Build trust-based relationships with internal and external stakeholders (MOEL - Ministry of Employment and Labor, K-OSHA) to resolve safety concerns collaboratively
- Operational Oversight: Support site-level safety audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments. Ensure alignment with GM's global safety standards and regulatory requirements
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) -
- 15+ years of professional experience in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health & Safety, or Manufacturing Operations.
- 7+ years in a leadership or People Leader role (Supervisor, Manager, or above) including cross-functional or multi-site responsibility
- Proven knowledge and skills in Safety Operations & Compliance including Korean MOEL regulations such as SAPA (Serious Accident Punishment Act), rules and regulations in Korea, Safety Management systems, risk identification and incident investigation, and contractor/vendor safety management experience.
- Strong understanding of Korean labor dynamics and union engagement
- Executive level leadership skills, including ability to lead large teams and ability to "influence without authority" for other areas and executive of the organization (managerial courage)
- Demonstrated ability to lead cultural change and drive accountability
- Strategic thinker with hands-on operational experience, understanding in general operations, and how to balance needs of business and finding the safest path
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak fearlessly and influence across levels
- Bachelor's degree required (Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental, or related field).
- Fluent Korean and strong English proficiency required (reading, writing, presenting).
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications) -
- Master's degree preferred (Engineering, Safety Management, Occupational Health, Business Administration).
- Professional Certifications strongly preferred (KOSHA-certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist or equivalent)
