Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy is dedicated to being the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and partners, everywhere. On the Product Design and Research team, we embrace this vision (and our pets!). We craft experiences that delight customers, veterinarians, and businesses that support them in keeping their pets happy and healthy. As a team of hard-working, collaborative, and fun-loving designers, researchers, and builders, we’re looking for creative and driven talent to join the pack.
As part of the Product Design & Research organization, we create connected, intuitive, and compassionate experiences that help care teams operate efficiently and enable pet parents to feel confident in the care their pets receive. We’re a collaborative, curious, and customer-obsessed team that loves solving meaningful problems at scale.
We are hiring an Associate Director of Product Design to lead and grow the design practice for Chewy Vet Care. In this role, you will guide multidisciplinary designers, partner with senior product and engineering leaders, and shape the experience strategy behind one of the fastest-growing areas of Chewy Health. This is a unique opportunity to help define the future of veterinary care through seamless digital ecosystems, modern practice tools, and customer-first experiences.
What You’ll Do
Product & Experience Strategy:
- Translate customer, care team, and business goals into clear, compelling design strategies and scalable product experiences across CVC.
- Lead systems-level thinking across end-to-end workflows spanning Pet Portal, Rhapsody (PIMS), telemedicine, scheduling, communications, and care team tools.
- Drive experience cohesion by establishing shared patterns, frameworks, and principles across a growing and evolving ecosystem.
- Guide long-term visioning and north star work that supports CVC’s operational and business strategy.
Execution & Delivery:
- Oversee the full design lifecycle - from discovery, journey mapping, workflows, interaction models, and IA to polished product design and delivery.
- Champion design quality, clarity, and rigor through effective critique, strong storytelling, and high standards for usability and accessibility.
- Ensure the team is prioritizing effectively across multiple complex initiatives, maintaining a bias toward action and progress.
Team Leadership & Growth:
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing product design team, including other managers and senior ICs.
- Build strong operating mechanisms that support healthy team culture, clarity in planning, and consistency in execution.
- Grow the team’s skills across interaction design, systems thinking, service design, AI, prototyping, and cross-functional influence.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, feedback, experimentation, and excellence aligned to Chewy’s Operating Principles.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner closely with product, engineering, operations, research, brand, and senior leadership across Chewy Health.
- Represent the design team in leadership forums, roadmap planning, operational reviews, and strategic discussions.
- Communicate design intent and decision-making with clarity and confidence to stakeholders at all levels, including C-suite.
Basic Qualifications
Design Experience & Expertise:
- 7+ years of experience in product design, UX, interaction design, or a related field.
- Strong portfolio or case studies demonstrating high-quality digital product work, ideally with complex systems and operational tools.
- Experience designing for multi-platform ecosystems and cross-channel user journeys (web, app, service experiences, internal tools).
Leadership & Team Management:
- 4+ years leading product design teams or large-scale initiatives.
- Proven ability to evaluate customer and business impact and to guide design decisions across multiple product areas.
- Experience establishing frameworks, processes, and operational mechanisms that scale across teams.
- Track record of effectively coaching designers and creating conditions for strong collaboration with product and engineering.
Communication & Collaboration:
- Excellent communication, storytelling, and presentation skills.
- Ability to articulate complex concepts simply and influence direction across diverse partners and senior audiences.
Education & Work Environment:
- Bachelor’s degree in design, HCI, or a related field - or equivalent professional experience.
- Willingness to travel quarterly as needed; this role requires a consistent presence in a local office.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience building or scaling design practices within a rapidly growing or multi-product environment.
- Background in healthcare, operations, e-commerce, or complex enterprise systems.
- Experience developing design standards, patterns, and ecosystems adopted across an organization.
- Familiarity with designing for both customer-facing and internal operational workflows.
Work Arrangement:
- Hybrid Model: 3-4 days in hub location per week
- Remote: This role is NOT a remote role.
The base salary range for this role is $166,000 - $265,500.-
The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.
We offer different types of insurance and benefits, such as medical/Rx, vision, dental, life, disability, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident. We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.
Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
