This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead:

ABB Corporate Research is the innovation engine of ABB, securing our technological leadership today and into the future. We work in close collaboration with the Motion, Automation, and Electrification business areas, as well as with leading academic and industrial partners. Within a creative and highly skilled research environment, we design, build, and validate novel concepts and prototypes for both physical and digital systems, covering the full value chain from electric energy sources and gridconnected converters to electric motors and drives. In the Material Technology and Electromagnetics team we deep-dive into the different materials used for active and passive components in complete powertrains and electrical devices. We also work with thermal aspects, electromagnetic design and optimization of electrical machines.

We are looking for motivated and curious summer workers to support our team during the summer period. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience in a professional environment and work closely with experienced colleagues. The position is well suited for you as a student at the beginning of your career who is eager to learn, take responsibility, and contribute to daily operations.

Main responsibilities:

  • Perform simulation work in the area of materials or electrical machines using e.g. finite element tools or machine learning

  • Perform experimental work in the area of materials characterization

  • Perform data collection and literature survey in the area of materials or electrical machines

  • Report your findings in written form

Note that we offer several positions, but make sure you have hands-on experience from at least one of the first two bullets and provide real examples in your cover letter.

Period: June 1st – June 30th 2026.

Location: Västerås, ABB Corporate Research Center, On-site

Your Background

  • Master student within materials science, electrical machine design, physics, solid mechanics or related area

  • Experience using numerical tools such as Ansys and data visualization for example using Python or

  • Practical experience from working in a laboratory

  • Strong communication skills in English
