Job Summary:
The Mc Allister Lab is seeking a highly motivated lab technician to join our pioneering research efforts at the intersection of immunity, aging, patient diversity, and cancer. Our lab's research is focused on understanding how immune fitness and aging impacts breast cancer progression and response to therapy. By improving our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involving age-associated immune fitness in disease control, the Mc Allister Lab aims to develop innovative, personalized therapeutic treatments and strategies that benefit breast cancer patients and account for their diversity.
We are looking for an entry-level lab technician with a background in biological research, data science and R programming, and the ability to independently complete lab tasks in a dynamic research environment. In this role, the individual will focus on supporting our research endeavors through the computational analysis of new and existing data derived internally and externally, with occasional experimental support of work using mouse models, cell and molecular biology, and histology.
Qualifications:
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(70%) Reporting to the Computational Lead, support computational efforts in the lab through analysis of internal and external datasets using R programming.

Use dry-lab techniques for analyzing -omic-level datasets, including differential gene expression analysis, regression-based modeling, and visualization to derive biological insights as part of individually led and collaborative projects in the lab.

Effectively communicate findings to a cross-functional, multidisciplinary research team of bench scientists, computational biologists, and clinicians.

Support manuscript production and grant writing by providing written methodological language and informative visualizations.

Maintain proper documentation of scripts using gold-standard practices for version control and code production. Maintain GitHub repositories, validate code, and ensure generalizability of scripts to other data. Keep code well commented and easy to implement.

(20%) Support bench science efforts investigating aging and breast cancer.As part of a collaborative team of instructors, graduate students, and postdocs, develop and perform wet lab techniques as needed.

Following established protocols and standard operating procedures, assist senior lab personnel with in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo tasks including but not limited to cell culture, qPCR, and tissue processing for analytical molecular biology assays.

Maintain a detailed and accurate electronic lab notebook documenting efforts.

(10%) Contribute to lab operations Assist with inventory, operational tasks, and ordering on an as-needed basis. Keep organized records and data storage structures in shared file drives.

Contribute to routine lab responsibilities, including weekly lab meetings and monthly journal clubs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in biology or related major required.
- laboratory and computational experience.
- Eagerness to learn and build skills, in both wet and dry lab settings.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience running, troubleshooting, and planning experiments.
- Cell culture experience preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Team player, willing to collaborate and ask questions.
- Good organizational skills, detail oriented.
- Sound degree of computer literacy including Microsoft suite and intermediate R programming.
- Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using basic and intermediate statistics.
- Demonstrated professionalism.
- Work independently after initial training with minimum supervision. Discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires work in an environment where animals are used for research. Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present.
