Your role and responsibilities
In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to ABB’s success with technology, software, product, and system development. Each day, you will identify and implement innovative solutions to relevant problems. You will also showcase your expertise by providing ideas and by being able to work both independently and as a part of a Research & Development (R&D) team.
The work model for the role is: hybrid
This role is contributing to the Motion, Traction in Untersiggenthal, Kanton Aargau.
You will be mainly accountable for:

Developing and qualifying power‑electronics modules, including concept creation, design, integration, and electrical/thermal testing of high‑power semiconductors.

Optimizing semiconductor switching behavior with a focus on energy efficiency, operational reliability, and continuously advancing traction converter platforms.
-
Collaborating closely with cross‑functional teams in mechanical design, software development, and converter assembly to introduce power‑electronics building blocks.

Driving R&D project work independently, ensuring compliance with processes and standards while achieving quality, time, cost, and scope targets.
Qualifications for the role

You are highly skilled in working with power electronics, semiconductor testing, switching behavior optimization, and modern traction converter technologies.

Ability to demonstrate your experience in electrical engineering and power semiconductor applications, ideally with {insert number of years} years of experience in the field.

(Optional) Experience working as a Power Electronics Engineer with traction converters or high‑power electronic systems.

Possess an enhanced knowledge of measurement technology, test setup architectures, and are familiar with simulation & programming tools such as Matlab, Plecs, Python as well as standard Office software.

You are passionate about innovation, teamwork, analytical thinking, and exhibit a proactive and structured working style.

Degree in Electrical Engineering (Fachhochschule/University) or equivalent.

You are at ease communicating in German and English.

You hold any required licenses or work permits valid in Switzerland.

Our power electronics team develops power electronic building blocks for our traction converter families used in vehicles like trams or locomotives, based on the most modern and reliable power semiconductor and gate control technology. We develop the key components for the evolution of our ABB traction products to strengthen our position in the target markets.
To strengthen our highly motivated team, we are looking for a technically and culturally open-minded Electrical Engineer (f/m/d). This position is graded as R&D Power Electronics Engineer.
