The Impact You'll Make in this Role
The Automated Inspection and Measurement group is responsible for fundamental technology development, application investigations, system integration and deployment, and long-term support across many 3M divisions in the areas of automated inspection, measurement, machine vision, automation, and process data systems. This group is a leader in digital technology within the corporation through its technology development and breadth of system deployment across 3M manufacturing operations.
As a Converting Automation & Inspection Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Design, integrate, and commission automated converting systems, with primary focus on fully automated slitters that ingest upstream inspection data for recipe management, cut planning, and dynamic control
- Design and develop automated inspection systems using expertise areas such as optics, image processing, and AI
- Working within a team setting to solve manufacturing challenges
- Support automated converting & inspection systems in a manufacturing environment, including travel to manufacturing locations and on-call support of systems
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Physics, or science field (completed and verified prior to start)
Preferred Qualifications
- Possess expertise equivalent (6 years) to that which would be obtained in a master's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related field
- One (1) year of experience in process engineering within a manufacturing or industrial setting
- Three (3) years of professional experience implementing automated inspection, machine vision, or automated converting/slitting systems
- Experience with 3M custom web inspection or commercial web inspection systems in professional or educational environment
- Experience in converting technology, including automated slitters in professional or educational environment
- Image processing, signal processing, optics, software, or electronics experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent networking skills, exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills
Work Location & Travel
- Work Location: Onsite Maplewood, MN
- Travel: May include up to 40% US & international, primarily to 3M manufacturing locations
- Relocation Assistance: May be authorized
- Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status)
Compensation & Benefits
Expected Compensation Range (US Applicants Only): $98,413 - $120,282, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
