The Challenge: The Logistics of Global Money Moving £35+ billion every month requires a robust, high-availability engine. At Wise, our Back End engineers solve the complex logistics of money movement at scale: - Liquidity Routing Engines: Building the algorithms that determine, in real-time, the most cost-effective and fastest path for capital across 50+ currencies. - Asynchronous Orchestration: Managing the "moving window" of global banking hours and ensuring transactions are queued, retried, and settled across varying regional bank protocols. - Immutable Ledgers: Ensuring 100% data integrity and reconciliation for every penny moved, maintaining rigorous risk and audit controls in a high-throughput environment. The Role We are looking for a Back End Engineer who thrives on building resilient, distributed systems. In this role, you will be the architect of the services that power our global treasury operations. You will design mission-critical systems that automate the movement of massive volumes of money, ensuring our "plumbing" is invisible, fast, and fail-safe. What You’ll Do - Architect Distributed Systems: Design and maintain scalable microservices (primarily in Java/Spring Boot) capable of handling billions in monthly volume with zero downtime. - Solve Global Logistics: Develop the logic that handles real-world constraints, such as bank-specific API quirks, holiday schedules, and regional settlement cut-offs. - Data Integrity & Reconciliation: Build and optimize the data infrastructure that ensures every movement of money is accounted for, creating a source of truth for our data-driven decision-making. - API Design & Integration: Build robust REST APIs that provide the Front End team with clean, performant access to complex financial data models. - Performance Engineering: Optimize database queries and message-driven architectures (Kafka/RabbitMQ) to ensure our systems scale alongside Wise’s rapid growth. ## Qualifications What You’ll Need - Back End Mastery: Deep expertise in Java (or similar JVM languages) and experience with Spring Boot or modern microservice frameworks. - Distributed Systems Knowledge: You understand event-driven architecture, concurrency, and how to build systems that stay consistent even when parts of the network fail. - The "Logistical" Mindset: You enjoy the challenge of modeling complex real-world rules—like banking regulations and currency volatility—into clean, maintainable code. - Database Fluency: Strong experience with SQL (PostgreSQL) and an understanding of how to manage high-stakes, transactional data with precision. - Operational Empathy: You build for observability. You care about logging, tracing, and monitoring because you know that in Treasury, "silent failures" are not an option. ## Additional Information For everyone, everywhere. We're people building money without borders — without judgement or prejudice, too. We believe teams are strongest when they are diverse, equitable and inclusive. We're proud to have a truly international team, and we celebrate our differences. Inclusive teams help us live our values and make sure every Wiser feels respected, empowered to contribute towards our mission and able to progress in their careers.
