Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.
Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who’ll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.
This role follows a hybrid work schedule and reports to a Systems Engineer Lead
You will:
-
Work with cross functional teams including software engineers, product managers, safety engineers, and operations leads to develop and implement requirements, system architecture, and verification strategy for ride hailing operations including processes, procedures, and tooling for nominal and emergency situations such as trip interruptions, severe weather, and outages at both the individual ADV and fleet wide level
-
Develop deep understanding of existing and new operations procedures, ADV responses, and tooling capabilities to inform recommendations to senior leaders and drive safety related decisions
-
Drive development of evaluation methodologies for operational processes, procedures, and tooling alongside operations & safety leads
-
Triage and deep dive on field events when they occur to identify areas for improvement in design. Be the point person for retrospectives and implement improvements to test coverage and processes to prevent similar issues from happening in the future
You have:
-
A bachelor’s degree in computer science or other technical field
-
At least 8 years of experience in systems engineering, safety engineering, or a related field
-
Ability to apply your existing deep technical knowledge in fields to new areas & learn quickly
-
A systems engineering mindset and a proactive, data-driven approach to fixing problems
-
Experience managing diverse stakeholders and driving high level cross functional alignment
-
Comfortable juggling multiple projects at once and working in ambiguity
We prefer:
-
Strong foundation in system engineering fundamentals such as requirements definition, formal verification and validation methods
-
Experience working in operations & deploying features or products at scale
-
Experience working with a safety critical system
-
A background in software engineering or strong software foundation including an ability to read C++ to understand feature implementation and debug issues more effectively
-
Ability to query data sets (SQL) and create dashboards for debugging and performance monitoring
