About the Team
Japan represents one of Uber's most critical and profitable global markets. Unlike other regions, the Japanese marketplace is a uniquely complex, two-wheeled ecosystem characterized by high density and an uncompromising demand for reliability.
As we look to the next five years, Japan is the primary theater for our most ambitious expansion efforts, including Grocery, Retail, and autonomous delivery. We are looking for an extraordinary "operator-technician" to lead the Marketplace team - the core "brain" that balances growth, delivery quality, and partner earnings.
About the Role
We are looking for an outstanding leader to lead our Marketplace and Delivery Partner Operations team in Japan. In this newly created role, you will be accountable for ensuring market-leading delivery to millions of consumers across Uber Eats and other lines of businesses while crafting a magical experience for delivery partners (DP). We are looking for a versatile thought leader who can balance high-level strategy with strong analytical insight and detail orientation, innovating on a wide range of topics critical to our partners and our business in both the short and long-term.
What You'll Do
- Ensure a market-leading experience for millions of consumers across Japan, balancing delivery quality and efficiency.
- Own the long-term vision, strategy, and execution for DP growth, ensuring we have a strong and resilient supply base to enable sustained growth of multiple lines of business.
- Bring to life our marketplace for newer lines of business (e.g. Grocery & Retail, Uber Direct, Uber Connect) by building new fulfilment types (e.g. Courier Pick Pack and Deliver), earning models (e.g. fleet, hourly guarantees), and vehicle types (e.g. 3-wheel, 4-wheel, robotics/AV)
- Create a safe, compelling, and high quality experience for DPs.
- Be a thought partner to the Policy team to strategize & execute on Uber's Policy reform goals.
- Define and implement our zero-emission strategy for Delivery, putting us on a path to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2040.
- Be a key member of the Japan Delivery Leadership Team, contributing to our long-term business strategy and ensuring we are fostering happy and high-performing teams.
- Be an extraordinary cross-functional partner to the many teams that you work with given the central importance of your team's work to our business: Policy, Legal, Communications, Community Operations, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Business Development, and more.
What You'll Need
- 15+ years of work experience, including time spent in both strategic and operational roles, supported by a history of delivering clear results.
- Strong track record of building, leading, and engaging complementary teams on complex projects.
- Exceptional analytical competence; high degree of comfort with data and understanding of technical analytical concepts.
- An appetite for taking risks in a fast-paced, competitive, and often ambiguous environment with a bias for action.
Bonus Points If
- Ability to speak Japanese a plus
- Experience in commerce, economics, analytics, finance, or engineering
