About the Role
The Uber Localization Team is currently seeking a Localization "Operations" Manager with a strong background in Machine Learning (ML) Program Management. In this pivotal role, you'll be at the helm of defining and driving the mission and vision for our Machine Translation (MT) and Large Language Models (LLM) projects, with a keen focus on enhancing translation quality while prioritizing scalability and cost-effectiveness. Your leadership will drive the research into the most promising MT and LLM models, ensuring they meet the needs of both our internal and external clients. Collaborating closely with the Localization (L10n) team, cross-functional teams within Uber, vendors, MLOps/LLMOps specialists, and external clients, you will spearhead the development of in-house Machine Translation and LLM models. These models are set to revolutionize how we support both our internal and external teams, aligning with our commitment to excellence in localization and global communication.
What You'll Do
- Program Development and Execution: Design and implement comprehensive MT and LLM programs that support both Uber's internal operations and external clients, ensuring alignment with our global communication and localization strategies.
- Integration and Technical Liaison: Build seamless integration points between Uber's internal services and tools, connecting them to our MT/LLM pipeline. Serve as a technical liaison for internal stakeholders and external clients-gathering requirements, identifying integration opportunities, and optimizing the pipeline for efficiency and utility.
- Best Practices and Guidelines: Establish and maintain best practices for MT-only and MT+LLM use cases across all client engagements. Ensure consistency, quality, and operational efficiency throughout the localization lifecycle.
- Model Selection and Evaluation: Partner with the Localization Operations (Loc Ops) and Language Model Engineering teams to select, evaluate, train, and deploy the most effective MT and LLM models. Aim to enhance both internal productivity and external localization outcomes.
- Support and Training: Respond to and fulfill team member requests related to MT and LLM programs. Provide support and training as needed to ensure effective adoption and usage of these technologies across the organization.
- Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders who rely on MT and/or LLM for translation. Monitor translation quality and impact, and use feedback loops to drive continuous improvement in service delivery.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead cross-functional initiatives and engage with internal localization teams and external partners. This includes gathering requirements, drafting product requirement documents (PRDs), and managing the execution of tool enhancements and process improvements.
- Data Analysis and Dashboard Development: Collaborate with data analysts and engineers to create a user-friendly dashboard that provides actionable insights into MT/LLM performance. This tool will empower clients to make data-driven decisions and refine their localization strategies.
What You'll Need
- College degree or equivalent technical experience of 2 years in technology
- 1 year of experience in localization within the high-tech industry from the client-side
- 2 years of experience in running MT/ML/AI or other machine learning programs in a medium to large-sized company (either from the client or vendor side)
- Understanding of MT engines, LLM models, parameter size, cost, training algorithms, and usage cases from both internal and external clients for the effective deployment of suitable MT and LLM models in production
- Familiarity with NLP and computational aspects of MT/LLM
- Proficiency in scripting languages like Python, Perl, GO, Ruby, Postman, and SQL
- Ability to streamline complex processes and enhance workflow efficiency, aided by guidance from senior team members
- Basic understanding of the Localization Operation Program and Language Management roles, along with their day-to-day functions
- Basic understanding of localization and internationalization concerns
- Capacity to navigate through ambiguity, work independently, and guide the course of projects
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, complemented by excellent business judgment
- High level of attention to detail, quality-oriented, and proactive
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage stakeholders across businesses, both internally and externally, with guidance from senior team members
- A self-directed approach, willing to take the initiative in confronting substantial challenges head-on
- Commitment to quality, which will influence the direction of the Uber brand
- Excellent team player
- Passionate about Uber and our mission.
Bonus Points If
- Three year experience in AI/ML in the high-tech industry on the client-side and leading MT/LLM programs is a plus
- Basic vendor management experience in a mature localization environment as a client
