We are seeking an experienced Correspondent to join Reuters' Breaking News team in Dakar.

About the Role

As our **Sub-Saharan Africa Breaking News Correspondent,**you will:

  • Produce real‑time headlines, newsbreaks, updates, sidebars, and visually driven human-interest stories.

  • Cover major breaking stories emerging from West & Central Africa and assist with coverage across other Sub‑Saharan African countries.

  • Coordinate closely with text and visuals colleagues across the region under direction of the Breaking News Editor for Sub‑Saharan Africa.

  • Plan by preparing Snap Templates, smart previews, prewrites and pivots with original angles for Updates. Think visuals: graphics, pictures, video.

  • Be versed in visuals-led breaking news by quickly assessing, making a coverage decision and escalating any event with strong or viral visuals, and quickly writing a story from it.

About You

To be our Sub-Saharan Africa Breaking News Correspondent, you will have:

  • At least three years of experience in the fast pace Breaking News or news monitoring and gathering environment, capable of working under pressure and collaborating in teams.

  • Proven strong news judgement and ability to process complex information quickly

  • Skilled at filtering news sources, including social media—to identify and report key developments, viral trends, and economic or political news across the region Sub-Saharan Africa region.

  • Fast, succinct, and accurate writing of headlines and stories under time constraints.

  • Working knowledge of global markets, especially in cocoa, oil, minerals, finance, and geopolitical affairs, with emphasis on Sub‑Saharan Africa

  • Fluent English; additional languages (e.g. French, Spanish or Portuguese) a plus.

Please note that no relocation package will be considered for this role.
