Job Description

Do you have a passion for innovative ideas and ground-breaking discoveries? With over $1 billion invested annually in R&D, at Thermo Fisher Scientific you’ll help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges, from giving cancer patients hope, ensuring safe drinking water and helping law enforcement tackle cases through forensics. We empower our teams to put science into meaningful action and give our R&D colleagues the autonomy, resources and tools they need to take science a step beyond.

This business group provides a broad mix of analytical instruments and services to a diverse range of end user markets including Safety & Security, Environmental, Food Safety, Life Sciences, Medical, Energy, and Minerals and Mining. Its instruments are deployed globally in the field and on the line, in dynamic environments where customers put a premium on quality, reliability and ease of use. With a global presence and more than 2,000 colleagues worldwide, we deliver product solutions that help customers make confident, real-time decisions.

Position Overview

We are seeking a UI/UX Product Engineer who is passionate about creating intuitive user experiences and skilled at turning complex requirements into elegant, user-centered interfaces. Strong engineering experience and a solid foundation in UI/UX best practices are essential. Experience with analytical technologies such as XRF or Raman is a plus, but a strong desire to learn is equally valued.

As a key member of an Agile Scrum team, this individual will serve as both a hands-on engineer and a product owner for UI workflows, shaping user experiences across handheld devices, desktop software, web platforms, and mobile applications. This role is ideal for someone who thrives where design, engineering, and product strategy intersect.

Key ResponsibilitiesUI/UX & Product Design

  • Partner closely with end users, product managers, and stakeholders to create and hone product requirements crafting them into scalable, user-centric designs.
  • Design and validate UI screens and workflows which meet the stated requirements for primarily handheld devices and their on-device GUIs, and any accompanying Windows, Web or smart phone-based companion applications, leveraging practical engineering experience and a strong understanding of usability principles.
  • Develop and maintain detailed screen wireframes, UI specifications, and functional documentation that guide development teams and Software Quality Assurance’s ability to craft test cases to validate behavior before a product’s development is complete.
  • Participate and maintain visibility into Thermo Fisher’s various UxD groups which provide guidelines for consistency across on-device, Web-based and Windows application spaces.

Product Ownership & Agile Delivery

  • Serve as Product Owner or UI lead within a Scrum team, ensuring UI/UX requirements are clearly communicated and prioritized.
  • Write thorough, clear user stories criteria related to UI features and workflows.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, backlog grooming, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive product vision, scope, and delivery timelines.

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work effectively with both local (Tewksbury) and global (Thermo Fisher Scientific) engineering, SQA, and product/project teams to ensure alignment on design intent and implementation guidelines.
  • Facilitate design discussions, provide UI/UX guidance, and coordinate across time zones as needed.

Communication & Documentation

  • Produce high-quality documentation including functional specifications, UI logic flows, and user interface behavior definitions.
  • Communicate complex ideas clearly and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Present design concepts, prototypes, and workflow rationale to stakeholders and leadership.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field experience.
  • 7 years of proven experience designing UI, handheld devices and Windows / Web-based  applications preferred.
  • Strong understanding of usability principles, UI patterns, and modern design standards.
  • Experience working within an agile Scrum environment as a product owner, business analyst, UI engineer, or similar role.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, detailed functional specifications and user workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal, written, and presentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in both local and distributed global teams.

Preferred

  • Experience with prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Balsamiq, Sketch, Adobe Axure.) for wireframes and mockups.
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (or equivalent) for SVG/icon and splash screen creation and lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with software development processes and working directly with engineering teams.
  • Experience with issue tracking software (e.g., Jira), team collaboration and documentation software (e.g., Confluence) and large-scale document storage mechanisms (e.g., Share Point).
  • Background in regulated industries (medical, scientific, industrial) is a plus.
