What to Expect

Tesla’s drive unit development team is looking for skilled and motivated mechanical engineers to push the motors and geartrains propelling our vehicles to the next level. The team is presently working to improve the current - and design the next - generation of drive units and is looking for engineers (any level) to help drive our designs to the physical limits. It's an exciting work environment with plenty of engineering resources and bright colleagues to collaborate with. As an industry leading company, Tesla offers the opportunity to work on bleeding edge technology in a fast paced, dynamic, and high visibility role.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and 3D modeling of mechanical components and assemblies including gears, sheet metal, magnetic wire, insulation systems, and others.
  • Solve tight packaging challenges including sealing, thermal management, interconnections, shock and vibration management, electromagnetic interference, electrical insulation etc.
  • Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies.
  • Assist hands-on in engineering prototype builds and component fabrication.
  • Collaborate with other mechanical, systems, electrical, digital control, manufacturing, and test engineers to take designs from a clean sheet through prototypes and into mass production.

What You’ll Bring

  • B.Sc./M.Sc./Ph.D. (w/ relevant internship/working experience) in Mechanical Engineering and evidence of exceptional ability.
  • Deep understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals (heat transfer, fluids, statics, dynamics, structural design).
  • Significant experience designing and building mechanical assemblies, for example motor/gearbox systems.
  • Proficiency using 3D mechanical design and analysis tools (CATIA V5 and/or V6, ANSYS).
  • Experience using GD&T to control part features.
  • Hands-on experience to build and test prototypes.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Experience with dynamic and electro-magnetic systems challenges such as NVH, EMI, high voltage
  • Experience with high volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stamping, etc.
  • Experience with PLM systems, engineering changes, deviations, BOM structuring, etc.
  • Knowledge in environmental, reliability, and safety requirements for automotive applications.
