Sr. Software Engineer, Commercial AC Charging
About the role
What to Expect
We’re carpeting parking lots and workplaces with AC charging. Done right, that changes how people move through cities. Done wrong, you show up to a public charger and it’s broken, offline, or useless. The Tesla Energy Device Software team is looking for a Software Engineer to build control, connectivity, and site orchestration software for commercial AC charging products so dozens to hundreds of chargers can coordinate load, identity, metering, and uptime without depending on the cloud for every decision.
Like other Tesla Energy devices, chargers need to be installed, commissioned, diagnosed, and kept reliable in the field. On a commercial site they also form a distributed embedded system: local controls over wireless meshes and wired backbones, integration with site energy and building systems, and interoperability with third-party backends and vehicles. Your software will span embedded and Linux-based platforms, local IoT protocols (including Thread and BLE), and industry interfaces such as OCPP and ISO 15118 Plug & Charge, while meeting regional metering and regulatory requirements.
With your help, we can make deploying and operating commercial charging easier, more interoperable, and more trustworthy at scale. Our stack is diverse by design. Pragmatism, willingness to dive into new codebases and standards, eagerness to work with stakeholders (product, compliance, hardware, partners), and engineering leadership are key strengths we expect you to bring to the table.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate with Product Managers and engineers across firmware, hardware, connectivity, compliance, and backend teams to turn commercial charging requirements into durable designs and specifications
- Design and implement local site control and coordination for multi-charger deployments: distributed state, load management, discovery/provisioning, and resilient operation when WAN is degraded or unavailable
- Build and maintain connectivity and interoperability layers: Thread, BLE, and related local networking; OCPP (and adjacent CSMS interfaces); ISO 15118 including Plug & Charge; and other third-party vehicle or backend protocols as needed
- Contribute to overall system architecture across device, site controller / gateway, and cloud boundaries: clear APIs, ownership of failure modes, and upgrade paths for large fleets
- Implement software that supports metering accuracy, auditability, and regional regulatory compliance, working with compliance and validation partners on certifiable behavior
- Develop tools and services for installation, commissioning, configuration, diagnostics, and partner interoperability testing
- Provide technical leadership and innovation to improve developer productivity, product reliability, third-party interoperability, and overall system resiliency
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in an extremely fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Experience developing highly available, mission-critical applications and corresponding test suites
- Real-world experience with Internet and IoT protocols (e.g. HTTP, REST, WebSockets, gRPC, MQTT, Matter/Thread, BLE) and systems languages (e.g. C, Rust, Go, C++)
- Experience building distributed or multi-node systems (even at embedded/edge scale): consensus-lite coordination, local messaging, offline/degraded-mode behavior, or site-level orchestration
- Familiarity with at least one of: OCPP, ISO 15118 (including Plug & Charge), EV charging backends, or other third-party energy/charging interoperability stacks- deep expertise in several is a strong plus
- Experience with embedded Linux or RTOS-adjacent device software & secure identity/crypto (PKI, TLS, certificates)
- Comfort reading standards and partner specs, driving interoperability issues to closure, and shipping pragmatic solutions under regulatory and schedule pressure
