A DAY IN THE LIFE:

Senior Director, Software Engineering – Pump Software will be responsible for overseeing the development, deployment and maintenance of embedded firmware integrated with our state-of-the-art insulin pumps t:slim and Mobi.  Pump Software is a critical component to our Tandem Diabetes automated insulin delivery system. The Senior Director will ensure our pump products are reliable, user-friendly, and compliant with all relevant medical and regulatory standards.

Leadership & Management

  • Defines and drives the technical vision and strategy for pump software development teams.

  • Leads, mentors, and develops a high-performing team of software engineers and engineering managers.

  • Fosters a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team.

  • Effectively represents as its leader the pump software team to Senior Leadership and Executive Management.

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including product management, program management, test and systems engineering, and mobile software engineering to deliver integrated solutions.

Embedded Firmware Development

  • Ensures firmware is secure, scalable, and meets the highest standards of quality and cybersecurity.

  • Ensures seamless integration to Tandem’s automated insulin delivery system including hardware, mobile, and digital health.

  • Provides technical leadership and embraces the philosophy of strong architecture and design of embedded software.

  • Implements robust processes for code reviews, testing, and continuous integration and test.

  • Ensures the team adheres to coding standards, documentation, and best practices.

  • Stays current with the latest embedded development technologies, trends, and best practices.

Regulatory and Compliance

  • Ensures all embedded software complies with relevant medical device regulations and standards (e.g., FDA, BSI).

  • Works closely with the regulatory and quality assurance teams to support compliance and audit activities.

  • Ensures compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA (when applicable), and other legal and regulatory requirements.

Organizational and Project Management

  • Directs long- and short-term planning of department personnel and budgets.

  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with software engineering services vendors in-country, nearshore and offshore.

  • Defines high level project scopes, objectives, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders.

  • Develops and manages project plans, ensuring timely delivery of milestones.

  • Identifies and mitigates risks and issues throughout the project lifecycle.

WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:

Hybrid: This role will be a mix of in-office work at our corporate headquarters in Del Mar, CA and remote work. This position is expected to be in office 2-3 days per week but may vary depending on business demands.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Strong leadership and people management skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead cross-team collaboration in an engineering organization.

  • Ability to influence and inspire teams to achieve ambitious goals.

  • Proven experience in leading teams that design, develop, test, and deploy embedded firmware on Real-Time Operating Systems (ex. SafeRTOS, Zerphyr).

  • Proficiency in C and embedded software design patterns and practices.

  • Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communications.

  • Familiarity with data analytics and observability.

  • Strong leadership and people management skills.

  • Experience with Agile and Scrum methodologies.

EXTRA AWESOME:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience.

  • 12 years of software development experience.

  • 7 years of leading software engineering teams, including 4 years in embedded software teams.

  • Experience in the medical device industry or other highly regulated industries is highly desirable.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base pay range for this position is $245,000 to $295,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus and a robust benefits package.
