Who We Are
Nuro is a self-driving technology company on a mission to make autonomy accessible to all. Founded in 2016, Nuro is building the world’s most scalable driver, combining cutting-edge AI with automotive-grade hardware. Nuro licenses its core technology, the Nuro Driver™, to support a wide range of applications, from robotaxis and commercial fleets to personally owned vehicles. With technology proven over years of self-driving deployments, Nuro gives the automakers and mobility platforms a clear path to AVs at commercial scale—empowering a safer, richer, and more connected future.
About the Team:
The Safety Office is a key part of our Public Trust organization that has independence from our technology development and business operational functions. We are focused on autonomous vehicle technologies that provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways while reimagining the role that automobiles can and should play in our society. In order to realize these massive benefits, we must develop and deploy our vehicles in a manner that protects safety and earns the public’s trust.
About the Role:
We are looking for a Senior/Staff Safety Management Systems (SMS) Engineer to design, implement, and continuously improve a company-wide SMS tailored to our autonomous vehicle operations. You will lead the development of policies, risk management processes, reporting mechanisms, and assurance activities, ensuring safety is embedded at every business and technical layer.
About the Work:
-
Architect and deploy an SMS (aligned with ISO 45001, ICAO SMS principles, AVSC reports, or equivalent aviation/automotive models).
-
Define safety policy, processes, and performance indicators across all AV programs.
-
Lead hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation planning for AV activities.
-
Establish and promote safety culture, including training and awareness programs for all business units.
-
Manage safety reporting systems and oversight of incident/near-miss investigations.
-
Collaborate with legal and compliance for regulatory engagement and audits.
-
Support continuous improvement based on field data, incident trends, and feedback loops.
-
Work with the TPM, safety standards, and operational safety teams to ensure cohesive company-wide safety integration.
About You
-
Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Engineering, Safety, Systems, or related field, with 5-8+ years of experience in SMS roles for high-risk industries (automotive, aviation, rail, etc.).
-
Proven record designing or operating a cross-functional SMS.
-
Depth in risk management, safety culture, and performance measurement.
-
Strong communication and change management skills.
