Northrop Grumman is seeking an experienced, highly motivated attorney to serve as Corporate Counsel II, Employee Benefits, to provide legal support across a broad array of employee benefits matters. The employee benefit plans provide benefits to over 250,000 participants, including almost 100,000 employees. The combined benefit plan trusts total almost $70 billion. Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Labor, Employment and Employee Benefits, this position could be responsible for matters that include qualified retirement plans (401(k) and pension), health and welfare plans and arrangements, executive (non-qualified) plans, and plan assets (trust operations and investments). Lawyers without the full range of expertise in all these areas are still encouraged to apply.
Specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the company's functional and operational leadership on legal matters relating to employee benefits, including business partners in human resources, finance, strategy, benefits administration, and plan investment operations

  • Provide strategic guidance to the Company regarding compliance with employee benefits laws and regulations, and create solutions to mitigate legal risk

  • Collaborate with lawyers across the Labor, Employment and Employee Benefits team and the broader Law Department on complex business matters
    Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school

  • Active state bar membership and capable of registering as in-house counsel in Virginia, as applicable

  • 10+ years employee benefits law experience at a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency involved in benefit plans regulation

  • Experience counseling clients on employee benefits laws, including but not limited to, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), Internal Revenue Code Section 409A, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Affordable Care Act

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in the employee benefits law function of a large and complex multinational corporation
  • Experience with U.S. government contractor aspects of employee benefits
  • Strong organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to balance multiple, competing priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels and areas within the organization up to and including executive leadership.
  • Ability to promote and contribute to a team environment that encourages and supports inclusion, drives innovation, and creates the best solutions to complex problems.
  • Integrity, outstanding analytical skills and strategic thinking, and exceptional judgment.
    Primary Level Salary Range: $227,700.00 - $327,300.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
