We’re seeking someone to join as a Valuation Control Analytics Model Developer to our Finance Division.

In the Finance division, we act as a partner to business units around the globe by providing management, review, analysis, and advisory services of the Firm’s financial and capital resources.

The Valuation Control (VC) department within Finance is responsible for ensuring that the Firms' valuations are accurate and to calculate additional capital charges for regulators. Most of the capital charges relate to a set of regulations called Prudent Valuation. The key process for monitoring valuations is the Independent Price Verification (IPV) which requires us to revalue all the firms' positions using independent market data. To perform these tasks', we work very closely with our colleagues in the Institutional Securities Group (ISG) and in the Market Risk Department (MRD). We are hiring a new team within VC to improve our ability to create and manage our own valuation models.
The primary responsibility is to act as a model developer for Valuation Control. Some of our processes, such as the IPV, reuse existing models owned by ISG. In other cases, we own our own models such as with Prudent Valuation calculations.

Since 1935, Morgan Stanley is known as a global leader in financial services, always evolving and innovating to better serve our clients and our communities in more than 40 countries around the world.

What you'll do in the role:

  • Improve on our End User Computing solutions by developing models to firm standards. Primarily you will develop models in Python. You will use the firms existing Risk Analytics framework for model management, execution and deployment in partnership with MRD. It is an option for you to create scala based models in the firms ISG risk platform called RICE.

  • Provide risk-based models for Prudent Valuation calculations.

  • Provide oversight of any models developed in the RICE analytics platform by IT. In these cases, model developers will sign off on the model implementation. In this capacity model developers will be supported by other members of Valuation Control.

  • Initially focus on developing models owned by Valuation Control to meet PRA standards for Prudent Valuation. Following this, you will also work on predictive AI to streamline processing and on big data analytics to improve understanding of our data.

  • Collaborate with a varied group of colleagues in Finance and across the Firm

  • Responsible for and lead aspects of individual and team deliverables and projects, leveraging in-depth knowledge of Finance functional area, product and/or client segments

  • Adhere to the Firm's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls; proactively identify ways to reduce risk in work

  • Act as a culture carrier; embody and set an example of the Firm's values and hold yourself and others accountable to Firm standards

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • In-depth knowledge of Finance functional area, product and/or client segment and technical skills, as well as of industry and competitive environment

  • Ability to operate independently with respect to most job responsibilities

  • Ability to provide positive and constructive feedback and innovate processes > Strong technical skills (python is required, scala or the willingness to learn it is an advantage)

  • Understanding of math to a level of proficiency to interact with modellers in other parts of the firm and to build risk-based models

  • At least 4 years' relevant experience would generally be expected to find the skills required for this role
