We are seeking a Critical Environment Energy Marshal – Authorised Engineer (AE) to provide electrical safety leadership and governance for Microsoft data centre operations across the United Kingdom.
The Energy Marshal holds Authorised Engineer (AE) responsibility, ensuring safe, compliant, and resilient power system operations across Microsoft UK data centre sites within mission-critical environments. The role provides electrical safety leadership and ensures consistent governance of electrical safety standards across operational campuses.

- Responsibilities- Provide Authorised Engineer (AE) governance during the transition from externally operated AE arrangements to in-house Microsoft AE ownership, ensuring continuity of electrical safety and compliance.
- Provide electrical safety leadership across UK data centre operations, promoting a strong safety culture and consistent application of electrical safety governance.
- Own and govern Microsoft’s Energy Isolation Program, establishing acceptance criteria and ensuring consistent application across campus activities.
- Ensure the Energy Isolation Program meets or exceeds Microsoft safety policies, applicable legislation, and recognised electrical safety standards.
- Own, implement, and govern the UK Electrical Safety Rules, ensuring alignment with the Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR), BS EN 50110-1, and Microsoft global safety standards.
- Establish and maintain a centralised Lockout / Tagout (LOTO) framework, defining requirements for both individual and group energy isolation activities.
- Approve and govern energy isolation procedures, ensuring defined stakeholder communication pathways are followed during the planning and execution of electrical works.
- Act as the Authorised Engineer (AE) and final electrical safety authority for electrical safety decisions, including abnormal events, incidents, and return-to-service approvals.
- Partner with construction, engineering, and operations teams where electrical safety activities impact live data centre operations.
- Act as a subject matter expert supporting energy isolation investigations and incident reviews.
- Participate in High-Risk Activity (HRA) planning related to switching, commissioning, and critical electrical works.
- Review and approve high-risk SOWs, SOPs, and MOPs, ensuring hazardous energy sources are correctly identified and controlled.
- Define and govern the Authorised Person (AP) framework, including competency assessment, role definitions, and authorisation processes.
- Ensure robust processes exist to verify competence, training, authorisation levels, and appropriate PPE for personnel performing electrical work.
- Produce monthly reporting on program performance, trends, lessons learned, and compliance status of the electrical safety and energy isolation programs.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related fieldOR equivalent practical experience in electrical engineering within mission-critical environments
- Demonstrated experience operating as an Authorised Engineer (AE) or equivalent senior electrical authority within regulated or high-risk environments.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical safety legislation and standards including:
- Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR)
- BS EN 50110-1 or equivalent electrical safety frameworks
- Proven experience managing energy isolation and control of hazardous energy programs.
Background Check Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
While not required, we also look for the following Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working within:
- Data centres
- Utilities
- Power generation
- Transmission and distribution
- Other high-availability critical infrastructure environments
Ability to communicate complex technical and safety requirements to both engineers and non-engineers.
Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, and redundancy architectures to ensure safe isolation strategies.
Experience in control of hazardous energy programs within mission-critical environments.
Experience operating and maintaining building MEP systems including:
- Power distribution systems
- Redundant UPS systems
- DC battery systems
- Standby diesel generation
- Grounding and life-safety systems
Strong understanding of electrical theory and its practical application in critical environments.
Knowledge of construction documentation including one-line diagrams, schematics, and construction drawings.
Experience working with Building Management Systems (BMS), automation, and control frameworks.
Experience governing or supporting electrical authorisation frameworks such as AE / SAP / AP / CP.
