The Director of Special Events is integral to building and implementing the overall strategy and development of events related to fundraising, cultivation and stewardship for Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (MVH) while working in close collaboration with leadership, vendors, and donors.
In this role, the Director of Special Events will be primarily responsible for managing a portfolio of annual revenue-generating events at MVH. S/he will also drive the development and execution of a host of cultivation events, including (but not limited to) leadership donor celebrations, dinners and cocktail parties hosted by supporters, on-campus informational and educational events, and a range of smaller-scale stewardship events such as hospital tours and luncheons between donors and hospital leadership. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Development, the Director is a key player in driving a robust events strategy to engage MVH supporters across the spectrum. The Director will be responsible for the overall execution and delivery of excellent, compelling, and lucrative events with a variety of scope and scale, never losing sight of the overarching goal of raising awareness of the incredible work being done at MVH, engaging supporters in a variety of creative and strategic ways, and ultimately increasing philanthropic revenue for the hospital.
- Job Summary
- Support the building and implementation of a robust event program for MVH that consists of a full range of revenue-generating, stewardship and cultivation events, varying in scale and in scope, with the ultimate goal of engaging supporters of all levels in support of the overarching goal of increasing revenue.
- Drive and manage all aspects of annual revenue generating events. Responsibilities include developing staffing and event plans, negotiating contracts, managing event budgets, program development, liaising with vendors, creating and managing event communications and collateral, and recruiting and leading volunteers.
- Work with Development team to lead and manage a collection of cultivation and stewardship and events designed to recognize, inform, and unite donors across the spectrum and engage them with the hospital. Responsibilities may include liaising with hospital leadership and support staff, managing vendors, and developing event communications and speaking programs.
- Implement and manage a robust third-party events program.
- Manage event websites, track RSVPs, create and send event email communications including save the dates, invites, follow up emails, logistics emails and thank you emails for all events.
- Drive the content and creation of event marketing, collateral, sponsorship materials, toolkits and signage.
- Solicit corporate sponsorships and in-kind donations by working in concert with other Development Office staff to build a successful corporate fundraising program.
- Prepare and manage expense and revenue budgets for events.
- Coordinate, schedule and execute event planning meetings and/or take notes, as needed.
- Track fundraising progress for event efforts and provide ongoing analysis and updates to appropriate members of Development teams.
- Request and manage complex data list needed to establish effective event communication.
- Creative and proactive development, implementation, and monitoring of best practice event programs on an ongoing basis and, making recommendations to improve existing programs.
- Support onsite at various events, as needed.

Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience
Experience:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience with demonstrated success and effectiveness in event management
- Experience with nonprofit events and a general understanding of fundraising and development preferred
Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to successfully drive and support an array of events – large and small in scale, virtual and in-person, on-site and off-site.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex activities simultaneously and coordinate strategies.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities at once and a willingness to be flexible as plans and strategies change and evolve.
- A proactive approach and an acute eye on trends in events and engagement, able to assess MVH’s current events lineup and discover ways to make them more efficient, more profitable, and more engaging.
- Meticulous attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
- Experience with building and managing budgets.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate concepts, stories, and ideas into accurate, practical, and tactical actions.
- Ability to support, build and lead or participate on a team.
- Advanced interpersonal, problem-solving, and analytical skills, and a keen ability to build and maintain strong relationships with development colleagues, vendors, hospital leadership and staff, volunteers, and MVH donors and supporters.
- Accomplished communicator.
- Ability to effectively troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- Must be able to work some nights and weekends and have the ability to travel locally and domestically.
- Must be collaborative, flexible, conscientious, level-headed under pressure, and results-oriented
