The Mass General Hospital Palliative Care & Geriatric Medicine Division is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for an innovative and exciting inpatient opportunity. The APP will provide direct care, consultation, counseling, and teaching to a select patient population with a range of advanced medical illnesses across the inpatient, observational, and/or emergency department settings.

We are seeking a clinically outstanding, collaborative, and compassionate APP with excellent communication skills. This role includes day-to-day management and direct care of patients through co-management with the attending physician/other APPs, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.

The APP should have in-depth knowledge and clinical expertise in serious illness communication and symptom management. The APP will assist patients and families with medical decision making; help teams clarify values and goals of care; and facilitate emotional, spiritual, and bereavement support. In addition, the NP will have continued responsibilities for patient, family, and staff education; clinical consultation; discharge coordination; research; and departmental leadership.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years of inpatient experience, strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of end-of-life care, advanced care planning, pain and symptom management and bereavement in context of serious illness
  • Master’s Degree or Doctor of Nursing from an accredited nursing program or
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Current Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse in the expanded role (NP) or as physician assistant (PA)
  • National certification in advanced practice nursing or, for physician assistants, certification by NCCPA
  • Prescriptive authority for controlled substances in MA (MCSR)
  • DEA registration for controlled substances
  • Certification in Basic Life Support

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. The NP is responsible for assessing and managing various patient populations, including those with medical and/or surgical conditions, as well as providing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, developing appropriate plans of care, and conducting ongoing evaluations. May also perform additional duties, such as precepting a small group of learners.

Essential Functions
-Provides direct care, counseling, and education to a designated patient population in ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural settings.
-Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
-Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
-Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
-Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
-Consistently provides high-quality and timely documentation, including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries.
-Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
