Job Summary

Responsible for collecting and processing blood specimens from patients for laboratory testing.

Patient Care Required: Yes

Essential Functions

  • Draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. May explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions.
  • Dispose of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
  • Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods.
  • Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
  • Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods.
  • Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Experience in lieu of degree: Not accepted

Licenses and Credentials:

  • Class D Passenger Vehicle Driver's License State License
  • Generic
  • HR Only (preferred)
  • MGH Security RMV Check/Registry of Motor Vehicles Driving Report
  • MGB Internal (preferred)

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of dedicated experience with blood draws required
  • Previous blood drawing experience mandatory for consideration
  • This is a per diem, part time position with minimal training

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of various techniques in collecting specimens
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and OSHA Regulations and ability to maintain absolute discretion over highly sensitive patient information
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively
  • Demonstrates proficiency of proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens
  • Superior customer service skills, clear communications skills, and ability to show empathy and respect for patients' privacy and autonomy
  • Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients
