The focus of the maintenance team is to keep equipment in the RDC fully operational. The RDC Maintenance Mechanic I is a knowledgeable repair person with exposure to and experience with RDC systems and building components. The Maintenance Mechanic I has specialist knowledge and complex repair capability in one of the following areas: conveyors, rolling stock, or building. In addition, the individual in this role has general knowledge and basic repair capability in the other two areas outside his/her specialty. In all instances, the Maintenance Mechanic I has sufficient electrical and mechanical knowledge to safely and independently repair equipment in the RDC. The Maintenance Mechanic I is able to integrate his/her trade skills, classroom knowledge, and systems experience to recognize and diagnose equipment issues, determine the type of repair needed, prioritize and plan the work, obtain or order the appropriate spare parts, and execute the repair. This individual is capable of mentoring a Maintenance Utility but also seeks assistance from a Maintenance Mechanic II or the Maintenance Supervisor, when needed.

Maintains appropriate certification as required by state and local regulations

Determines safety precautions and requirements for task

Prepares worksite; performs lock-out/tag-out

Gathers tools and spare parts for task

Uses tools safely; checks condition of tools prior to using; uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

Evaluates condition of equipment; determines spare parts needed and repair effort required; recognizes potential for breakdown in near future and takes pre-emptive action

Plans work and execute task

Mentors Maintenance Utility; uses these associates as assistant if appropriate

Seeks assistance from a more experienced mechanic if needed

Leaves worksite in good condition

Turns in unused spare parts

Documents condition of equipment as found, work performed, spare parts used, and any other applicable information

Enters data into 7I system (computerized maintenance management system); closes out work orders and Preventative Maintenance (PM) requests

Informs next shift of remaining work

Provides status of incomplete tasks bridging the two shifts

Demonstrates positive and effective communications with maintenance customers

Serves as an expert in two of the following specialty areas: conveyors, rolling stock, or building

Within specialty areas: diagnoses, plans, and repairs complex equipment failures with minimal guidance from Maintenance Mechanic II and Supervisors

Outside of specialty areas: diagnoses, plans, and executes basic repairs

Attends and participate in training as scheduled; continues to increase skill in his/her specialty area and learns and develops a working knowledge of the repair methods for the other work areas. These areas include the following maintenance systems:
Conveyor systems, controls, and subsystems,

Industrial Electrical Systems,
-
Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC),
-
Fire Suppression systems,
-
Welding and Fabrication,
-
Plumbing and Carpentry (Physical plant-type construction and repairs),
-
Forklift and Material Handling systems, including subsystems and components of the equipment,

Preventive maintenance technologies.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Performs additional tasks as assigned by Maintenance Supervisor

Provides additional training to Maintenance Utility as required

Assists with changing batteries in equipment
Minimum Qualifications
-
High School diploma or GED General Studies or technical school graduate and 1-2 Years 2 Years of Experience in her/his specialty area

1-2 Years Combination of experience and/or technical training in electrical/electronic theory ranging up to 600 volts systems (or willingness to obtain appropriate training within 1 year of employment)

DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State valid state driver’s license
-
If required by local regulations, certified to perform work at the Maintenance Mechanic level (such as electrical work in the state of Oregon)
Preferred Skills/Education

Experience and/or certification with welding and fabrication

Experience operating various maintenance and operations vehicles and equipment

Experience reading blueprints, schematics, and other technical drawings

Certification for electrical work and/or high voltage work
