Legal analysis

We're looking for a motivated and adaptable insurance regulatory lawyer to join us in shaping the future of legal for our growing EU and UK operations. This isn't just about maintaining infrastructure, it's about being instrumental in building and optimising it, especially as we integrate cutting-edge AI into our business.

As a key legal advisor in our hyper-growth startup, you'll take significant ownership of complex legal issues, synthesising broad legal skills and P&C industry knowledge to pioneer new approaches and address diverse challenges in a dynamic environment.

We believe three things matter for every role at Lemonade: drive to push through challenges, efficiency that keeps standards high while moving fast, and adaptability that lets you pivot with data and AI insights. These aren't buzzwords, they're how we actually work.

Our AI-first approach isn't just a tagline either. We're building the future of insurance with AI at the center, and we need people who are genuinely excited to learn and grow alongside these tools.

IN THIS ROLE YOU’LL:

  • Serve as legal counsel, proactively advising on complex and evolving insurance-related laws and regulations across EU and UK jurisdictions

  • Review contracts for clarity and compliance for vendors, contractors, and more

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to develop robust policies and procedures, and strategically manage responses to regulatory inquiries

  • Advise on, draft, and review a wide range of commercial contracts and legal documents, alongside supporting policy interpretations, claims handling, agency relationships, reinsurance, financial condition, reporting, marketing, acquisition, and more

  • Spearhead the navigation of EU and UK regulatory expectations, including managing critical regulatory reporting and proactively monitoring, analyzing, and advising on legislative changes to ensure strategic compliance

  • Act as a trusted legal advisor to European Leadership and senior managers, providing strategic insights and influencing key business decisions

  • Drive improvements in Corporate Governance and Third-Party Risk Management frameworks, taking a lead role in day-to-day execution and strategic enhancements

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 7+ years of experience in a Big Law corporate practice within the insurance field, and/or in-house corporate experience with an insurance company

  • 7+ years property/casualty experience

  • Commercial law experience

  • Fully qualified and licensed to practice law in the EU and the UK

  • General experience with regulatory reporting, preparing presentations, and executive-level analysis and reviews

  • Demonstrated experience leading significant legal projects, managing complex regulatory matters, and advising on critical business initiatives within the insurance sector

  • Proven ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and persuasively to senior management and board members, building strong relationships as a trusted advisor

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proven track record of developing pragmatic and strategic legal solutions to complex business challenges

  • Privacy/Data Protection Expertise, a plus

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with minimal supervision

  • Ability to work from our London office once a week

  • Enthusiasm about learning and adapting to the exciting world of AI – a commitment to exploring this field is a fundamental part of our culture
