Job Description:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The company is seeking a candidate with extensive experience in both pharmaceutical R&D and external engagement with a focus on autoimmune diseases. The position will be located within the Shanghai Innovation Center in China and operating as a member of both the J&J IM Immunology Therapeutic Area and the Johnson & Johnson External Scientific Innovation team in the APAC region.

The successful candidate will contribute to the creation and implementation of the external innovation plan to deliver the Immunology Therapeutic Area (TA) strategy in the APAC region. The candidate will demonstrate superior scientific credibility, and excellent communication and influencing skill in English and Chinese that will solidify JNJ IM as the partner of choice in a highly competitive external landscape. He or she will apply the highest-level scientific expertise and insights to identify and evaluate opportunities, lead scientific diligence, support incubation and nurture early-stage ideas, and cultivate an expansive network of experts in China and the rest of APAC.

This position will report into one of the global Immunology TA Scientific Innovation Leaders and is supported by the Regional Head of Johnson & Johnson External Scientific Innovation Shanghai.  In collaboration with the Shanghai Regional Sourcing and Incubation team, this candidate will imbed himself or herself into the vibrant ecosystem in China and will have a strong focus on identifying early areas of disruptive science that could be nurtured and incubated through external partnerships.  This candidate will be empowered to deploy Johnson & Johnson ’s broad offering to potential partners, including R&D collaborations and licensing, equity investments, company incubation with JLab, and new company formation, in partnership with co-located experts in Legal, Finance, Venture Investors and the New Company Formation team.   

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • A PhD or MD coupled with at least 10 years of industry/academia/biotech experience is desired.

Experience and key competencies:

  • Strong Immunology expertise with a track record of accomplishment in drug discovery/development in a field relevant to autoimmune diseases
  • Experienced in external engagement with a deep network in China and APAC innovation ecosystem
  • Excellent communication skills, English/Chinese
  • Excellent stakeholder management, ability to navigate complex organizations
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects and relationships at all stages of development
  • Strong “self-management” with the ability to operate as part of a global team with limited supervision
  • A consummate team player with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of Johnson & Johnson External Innovation functions and the Immunology TA organizations.
  • Willingness to travel extensively in the region
