Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone Orthopaedics company, operating as De Puy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of De Puy Synthes, and your employment would be governed by De Puy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by De Puy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.

Purpose:

The Group Manager of R&D Project Management will play an exciting role in shaping and carrying out projects to improve healthcare as a member of Depuy Synthes Trauma, CMF, and Sports! This role has comprehensive supervisory responsibilities within the Project Management Office (PMO), management of PMO operations and execution, as well as possible project/program management duties. The primary objective for the PMO is driving New Product Development (NPD) projects to successful completion on time and on budget. Other objectives include management of the R&D departmental budget and resources, communication and reporting on project/program status and metrics to various cross-functional business partners, management of shared service priorities, partnering with other NPD departments (i.e. supply chain, quality, regulatory) to proactively identify challenges and mitigate them, and driving continuous improvement of PMO excellence and execution.

You will:

  • Responsible for delivery of any assigned NPD projects and/or the oversight of NPD projects of other project managers in the PMO

  • Responsible for portfolio reports and business planning (budget and resource planning/ management)

  • Provide comprehensive coaching regarding project execution to assigned Project Management personnel

  • Coordinate appropriate Project Management talent allocation within the portfolio of Trauma, CMF and Sports projects. Assign according to projected scopes and demand in alignment with project goals

  • Champion a positive culture, accountability, and creativity among assigned project teams and within the department

  • Supervise and develop Project Management team to achieve best-in-class service to Trauma, CMF, Sports R&D

  • Promote and implement innovation initiatives for PMO departmental improvements. Responsible for championing to completion any changes in process / procedure to streamline product development

  • Ensure proper communication with internal and external partners to coordinate project plans, including dependencies and phasing of resources, budget, and launch/timeline goals

  • Facilitate resolution of project and departmental challenges with other R&D Group Managers and/or department head(s). Represent the PMO at the management level meetings and/or activities within R&D

  • Ability to quickly learn and understand the technical aspects of the medical device products/industry and ability to confidently drive resolution and communicate detail of technical project issues with cross-functional team members

Qualifications:

Education:

  • BS degree in engineering, life science, or business required

  • MBA or other MS degree preferred

Required:

  • A minimum of 7 years’ business experience in project management, with the majority being in Product Development

  • Medical Device industry experience

  • Evidence of coaching or mentoring others required

  • Experience with MS Project, Smart Sheet, Agile/Scrum or Kanban, MS Teams, Share Point, Microsoft Suite

  • Experience leading a project team from concept/feasibility through commercialization

  • Excellent social skills, verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to professionally interface at all levels within the company and with customers

  • Enjoys working independently, providing multiple solutions to problems and effectively integrating systems

  • Well organized, self-motivated, energetic, creative and resourceful

Preferred:

  • Experience managing a geographically dispersed team

  • Dashboard creation experience- tools such as Smartsheet and Power BI

  • Previous experience running large programs with multiple workstreams and/or externally developed products

  • PMP certification or similar
