THE OPPORTUNITY:

insitro integrates diverse data modalities—from in vitro cellular models to large-scale human clinical datasets—to identify disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets. Our clinical data software team uses, builds, and deploys software to develop novel phenotypes from high dimensional clinical data, and perform genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and downstream statistical genetics analyses.

In this role, you will develop data pipelines, statistical computing infrastructure, and tools that enable our scientists to analyze complex clinical and genomic datasets at scale. You'll work at the intersection of data engineering, platform development, and scientific computing, collaborating closely with computational biologists, statistical geneticists, and machine learning researchers to accelerate our drug discovery efforts.

This role will report to the Senior Manager, Clinical Data and can be either hybrid coming onsite to our South San Francisco headquarters or remote with travel to the office as work necessitates; local candidates will have the option of a hybrid approach with three days per week in the office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, develop, and scale platform capabilities required to design, run, and interpret ML-powered screens

  • Build and evolve interactive interfaces for data exploration, quality assessment, and visualization to help scientists iterate quickly on experimental data

  • Partner with statistical geneticists and ML scientists to translate complex experimental needs into clear, actionable technical plans and high-quality, shipped software

  • Set and uphold best-in-class practices for data integrity, lineage, reproducibility, and observability across the entire clinical discovery lifecycle

ABOUT YOU

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Statistics, or related field and 2-4+ years of software engineering experience

  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience building production data pipelines and APIs

  • Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), SQL, schema design, and query optimization

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) for data processing and storage at scale

  • Understanding of software engineering best practices: version control, code review, testing, containerization, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and a demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable code and contribute to shared codebases

  • Experience with data processing libraries (e.g., pandas, Polars), workflow orchestration tools (e.g., redun, Airflow, Nextflow, Snakemake) and distributed data processing frameworks (e.g., Ray, Dask, Spark)

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and translate scientific requirements into robust technical solutions

  • Strong communication skills and comfort working in a team-oriented, research-driven environment

About insitro

insitro is a drug discovery and development company using machine learning (ML) and data at scale to decode biology for transformative medicines. At the core of insitro’s approach is the convergence of in-house generated multi-modal cellular data and high-content phenotypic human cohort data. We rely on these data to develop ML-driven, predictive disease models that uncover underlying biologic state and elucidate critical drivers of disease. These powerful models rely on extensive biological and computational infrastructure and allow insitro to advance novel targets and patient biomarkers, design therapeutics and inform clinical strategy. insitro is advancing a wholly owned and partnered pipeline of insights and therapeutics in neuroscience and metabolism. Since launching in 2018, insitro has raised over $700 million from top tech, biotech and crossover investors, and from collaborations with pharmaceutical partners.
