The Dallas Morning News seeks a journalist with a strong sense of curiosity and accountability to cover the growing world of wealth and philanthropy in North Texas, a new beat for the Business team.

From major charitable foundations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to local billionaire donors and the rise of corporate giving and faith-based philanthropy, this beat sits at the intersection of money, influence and civic life.

This reporter will break exclusive stories, craft deeply reported enterprise and investigative features, and explain how wealth shapes the region — primarily concentrating on North Texas.

The News is rapidly expanding its Business team to produce the most dominant, distinctive coverage in Texas with robust digital storytelling, the new “Commerce Street” LinkedIn newsletter and a reimagined Business Sunday section in print and ePaper.

What you'll cover:

  • Report and write stories that explore the influence of high-net-worth individuals, charitable foundations, corporate donors and faith-based institutions in North Texas

  • Investigate how wealth is used to shape public life — through donations, political contributions, nonprofits and legacy-building efforts

  • Develop sources within the philanthropy, finance, real estate and nonprofit sectors, as well as among watchdog groups and community advocates

  • Scrutinize IRS filings, campaign finance records, real estate transactions and other public documents to uncover newsworthy trends and hidden dynamics

  • Collaborate with editors, data and visual journalists, and other newsroom teams to elevate coverage

  • Produce a mix of daily stories, longer-term enterprise pieces and occasional investigations

  • Represent The Dallas Morning News at community and industry events when needed

Responsibilities:

  • Break news and write deeply reported enterprise stories

  • Build and maintain a wide network of sources across sports, business, law, media and higher education

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on the business, sports and visuals teams

  • Contribute to live events, panel discussions, native videos and other storytelling platforms

  • Turn complex financial and legal developments into clear, accessible reporting for a broad audience

Job requirements:

  • Applicants should have at least three years of related reporting experience

  • Valid driver's license and registered vehicle to travel to assignments

Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of reporting experience, ideally with exposure to business, investigative, or nonprofits

  • Strong sourcing, writing and reporting skills

  • Aptitude for financial documents, public records and legal filings

  • Track record of strong enterprise work and breaking news

  • Adept with social media and website analytics

  • Familiarity with the Dallas-Fort Worth landscape is a plus, but not required

  • Fluency in Spanish is an advantage

Education:
A bachelor's degree in journalism or related field
