Job description:

The San Antonio Express-News is looking for an experienced photojournalist who is proficient in documentary photojournalism and excels in daily assignments across a wide array of topics.

The Express-News is known for its documentary focus and is looking for new, creative ways to connect with digital readers through still images and video. Proficiency in video will be a plus.

The Express-News covers South-Central Texas. Subject matter includes the SpaceX launch site in deep South Texas, wineries in the Hill Country, and features and news across San Antonio and its environs. San Antonio is the nation’s seventh most populous city and one of its fastest growing. Visual opportunities are plentiful, and we are often at the center of national stories touching on immigration, international trade, climate, drought and the space race.  

The Express-News collaborates on many stories with its fellow Hearst papers: the Austin American-Statesman, the Houston Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News. We have an especially close partnership with the American-Statesman. A regional director of visuals based in San Antonio oversees both papers, with a deputy director resident in each newsroom. 

The Express-News staff uses Canon mirrorless equipment, Mac laptops, Photoshop, Photomechanic, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and more. Proficiency with those programs is a must, as is a reliable personal vehicle and the ability to work while in the field.

The Express-News photo staff has won numerous national, regional and state awards for excellence in photojournalism. In 2015 and again in 2018, Express-News photojournalists were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.

The ideal candidate for the current opening will have 5 to 10 years of experience working for a daily news organization and proficiency in both still photography and video journalism.
