Introduction

The Feature-Rich CMOS Business Unit at Global Foundries is seeking a motivated Junior CMOS Image Sensor Device Engineer to support our next-generation imaging and device-technology development. This role is based in Leuven, Belgium, where you will work embedded within IMEC’s world-class research environment, collaborating closely with IMEC scientists and Global Foundries device, integration, circuit, and TCAD teams. You will contribute to the development and optimization of photodiodes, pinned photodiodes (PPDs), SPAD/SiPM pixels, and CIS analog readout structures, enabling future imaging platforms across GF’s Feature-Rich CMOS technologies. This position is ideal for engineers passionate about imaging device physics, semiconductor R&D, and cross-organizational collaboration, including those considering future doctoral studies.

Your Job

  • Support device and pixel development for photodiodes, PPDs, SPAD/SiPM pixels, and related CIS device structures.

  • Collaborate with IMEC teams and Global Foundries Feature-Rich CMOS device, FEoL Integration, and platform groups to identify and drive CIS and SPAD sensing technologies.

  • Define, design, and evaluate device/pixel test structures, including electro-optical test methodologies.

  • Perform electro-optical and electrical characterization, analyzing key device KPIs such as quantum efficiency, conversion gain, dark current, noise behavior, and CIS as well as SPAD-specific metrics.

  • Work with TCAD and compact-modeling teams on simulation-based device predictions, experiment planning, and model correlation.

  • Interface with analog readout designers to support low-noise CDS/ADC architectures and pixel/readout co-design.

  • Contribute to DTCO, DOE-driven explorations, and structured development cycles from concept to silicon validation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Semiconductor Engineering, or related fields.

  • Strong interest in CMOS image sensing, photodiodes, CIS/SPAD pixels, and semiconductor device physics.

  • Understanding of semiconductor fundamentals and optical interactions.

  • Basic skills in Python or MATLAB for data processing; proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills in a cross-functional, international environment.

  • English language proficiency at C1 level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with electro-optical measurements, pixel characterization, or sensor-level testing.

  • Familiarity with TCAD tools (Synopsys, Silvaco), optical simulation, or VLSI layout basics.

  • Understanding of analog readout circuits, especially CDS/ADC design fundamentals and low-noise device-circuit interactions.

  • Experience with structured problem-solving tools (DOE, FMEA, etc.).

Why This Role is Unique

  • Work on-site at IMEC, one of the world’s top research centers for semiconductor and imaging technologies.

  • Contribute directly to Global Foundries’ Feature-Rich CMOS Business Unit, enabling differentiated imaging solutions across a global technology portfolio.

  • Collaborate across the full imaging pipeline: device → process → pixel → readout → modeling.

  • Engage with cutting-edge innovations in PPD design, SPAD technology, and ultra-low-noise readout circuits.

  • Excellent opportunity for early-career engineers aiming to build deep expertise or pursue a future PhD in semiconductor device physics or imaging.

Diversity is part of our corporate DNA. For this reason, we would particularly like to encourage women to apply for positions with us. As we value equal opportunities and are committed to inclusion, we welcome applications from people with disabilities.
