Job Description Summary

In this role you will demonstrates accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. You will integrate and develop processes that meet business needs across the organization, manage complex issues within functional areas of expertise, be involved in long-term planning, and contribute to the overall business strategy.
As a part of Avio Aero Engineering Material Systems GBX team you will support and lead the development phase and the production activities related to Gearbox rotating components on Avio Aero Civil and Military fleet components.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Design Engineering, Global Research & Supply Chain to establish requirements for materials and special processes including heat treatment, shot peening, non-destructive testing and other special processes to ensure proper quality maintenance. Review supplier documentation, perform audits and evaluate test results against GE and Avio Aero requirements.

  • Establish a collaborative network with global Engineering Material Systems experts to drive innovation in high-performance gear alloys and advanced transmission materials.

  • Support and manage the resolution of material processing issues encountered during manufacturing of gears, both internally and at suppliers’ level, with impact on the system life cycle.

  • Determine, in consultation with Design Engineering, proper disposition of discrepant hardware through case records issuing.

  • Support and lead long-term R&D programs focused on gear-specific materials and processes. Execute developmental testing and hardware test campaigns to qualify part processing.

  • Help in identifying strategic partners (i.e. Universities, Research Centers and specialized suppliers), build suitable plans to reach feasibility studies and understand the go/no-go criteria for materials and technologies selection.

  • Support and lead collaborative cross-functional teams (materials, design, manufacturing) to advance the technical maturity of gears manufacturing methods through the TRL / MRL processes.

  • Plan, advocate and manage the budget for gear-related development and production support activities.

  • Get the ownership of periodic status reviews and give updates to senior leadership.

  • Support and execute technical projects & programs required to reduce technical risks associated with new material and manufacturing methods for gears applications, build and leverage significant domain expertise in the advanced materials field.

  • Promote and maintain a productive working climate by promoting global teamwork and cross-functional efforts to achieve and maintain excellence in quality and design of gear components.

  • Review material chemistry, physical and mechanical properties to substantiate gear manufacturing processes and detect trends that may indicate undesirable changes in product quality.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • Knowledge of gears and shafts materials and processes, including deep knowledge of specialized steels, heat treatments and other special processes.

  • Experience in material testing applied to transmission components.

  • Direct involvement or proven experience in research activities.

  • Familiarity with shop operations and quality systems for precision gear production.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a clear aptitude for working in multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

  • Proficiency in Italian and English (both written and verbal)

  • Work Visa, in accordance with local regulation, is required

Desired Characteristics

  • PhD in Materials Science or related disciplines, with a focus on mechanical transmissions.

  • Green belt or Black Belt Six Sigma certification and/or advanced Statistics knowledge for process optimization.

  • Proven self-starter and independent worker capable of leading cross-functional teams.

  • Direct experience in aerospace gears-related materials and processes.

  • Fast in action combined with rigorous and detailed technical review.

  • Significant experience in a materials science engineering role, preferably within the gears industry.

  • Outstanding teamwork skills with a proactive approach.
