The VAT & Protection Testing Engineer is responsible for ensuring the end-to-end quality validation of protection and control panels before dispatch through the Verification After Test (VAT) process.This role involves performing IED configuration, secondary injection testing, functional verification, and documentation, ensuring compliance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and internal quality standards.
The engineer also contributes to continuous improvement initiatives, defect reduction, and cross-functional technical coordination to enhance product quality and testing efficiency.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- VAT Execution and Panel Validation
Perform Verification After Test (VAT) for all manufactured panels to confirm correct wiring, logic functionality, and performance as per engineering drawings and customer requirements. Conduct functional testing of protection, interlock, and control circuits to ensure operational integrity Validate panel performance under simulated field conditions and record results in standardized formats. Identify and document deviations, discrepancies, or rework requirements during testing. Ensure VAT checklists, reports, and test records are properly completed and archived.
- IED Configuration and Testing
Perform configuration and parameterization of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) including protection relays, meters, and communication units. Carry out secondary injection testing to verify relay operation, tripping logic, and scheme correctness. Creating the MCL & ICD files for integration with scada systems. Maintain configuration templates and settings files for traceability and repeatability Ensure all test instruments and software tools are used as per calibration and procedure requirements.
- Quality Improvement and FPY Enhancement
Support initiatives aimed at improving First Pass Yield (FPY) and reducing Defects per Panel (DPP). Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) of test failures or repetitive issues. Coordinate with Engineering and Production teams to implement corrective and preventive actions. Track testing trends and provide feedback for design and process improvement.
- Technical Coordination and Support
Act as a technical interface between Testing and Engineering teams for all protection-scheme-related discussions. Provide on-floor feedback on design errors, wiring deviations, and testing difficulties. Assist in reviewing engineering drawings, protection logic diagrams, and control schemes for accuracy and completeness. Support customer FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests) and technical audits as & when required
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Technical Skills:
Sound understanding of protection and control schemes used in power systems. Good knowledge in IED configuration, secondary injection, and scheme validation. Working knowledge of communication protocols (IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3, etc.). Ability to interpret electrical wiring diagrams, control schematics, and logic drawings. Proficiency in test tools, relays, configuration software, and documentation systems Knowledge on Auto CAD is preferrable.

Analytical and problem-solving approach. Strong attention to detail and process discipline. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work under timelines and handle multiple tasks efficiently. Continuous learning mindset and willingness to adapt to new technologies.
Qualification- B.E in Electrical and Electronics engineering with 4-5years
experience in manufacturing industry in Relay testing
