About Baytown

With a population of more than 77,000, Baytown, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Those who live and work in Baytown will find an area rich in history, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities due to its proximity to scenic waterways, namely Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou.

Founded in 1919, Exxon Mobil's Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.

Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.

The researcher will leverage deep polymer science expertise to develop fundamental structure–property–processing relationships and connect innovative polymer molecular structures to their resulting material properties, performance, and end use value.

• The researcher will leverage deep polymer science expertise to develop fundamental structure–property–processing relationships and connect innovative polymer molecular structures to their resulting material properties, performance, and end use value.

• Conduct polymer synthesis or collaborate closely with chemists and cross functional partners to design, synthesize, and evaluate novel polymer structures.

• Drive polymer application development and processing studies to translate new materials into viable commercial applications.

• Engage with new market development teams to identify technical opportunities, guide portfolio strategy, and support commercialization pathways.

• Leverage external partnerships and 3rd party capabilities to accelerate learning, expand testing capacity, and enhance technology development.

• Drive high quality technical communication, including reports, publications, presentations, and patent disclosures.et of primary job duties, tasks, and functions specific to the position:

About you

Skills and Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related field.

• Expertise in polymer physics and structure–property relationships, including experience with polymer processing and characterization.

• Working knowledge or hands‑on experience with polymer chemistry and polymerization techniques.

• Ability to plan and execute independent lab work, while collaborating effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

• Record of technical publications or presentations, with interest in continued external engagement.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

• Demonstrated application of structure–property insights to support process and performance optimization.

• Demonstrated capability in novel polymer synthesis.

• Skills in programming and data analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB).

• Post doctoral research experience.
