Senior Software Development Engineer, Engineering Enablement
Introduction to the Team
Expedia Technology teams partner with our Product teams to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.
Engineering Enablement defines and operates the enablement systems that shape how engineering works across Expedia Group. We design and integrate the Internal Developer Portal (IDP), AI Enablement ecosystem, onboarding and scaffolding systems, documentation platforms, workflow automation layers, and engineering intelligence infrastructure that reduce systemic friction and improve measurable engineering performance.
Our systems serve thousands of engineers and form a cohesive engineering operating system — powering service creation, documentation, automation, governed AI-assisted workflows, and performance visibility across the organization.
Why This Role Matters
As engineering complexity scales, unmanaged tooling, fragmented workflows, and disconnected AI experimentation increase cognitive load and reduce velocity. Engineering Enablement addresses these challenges through integrated system design. The systems you architect will directly influence onboarding time-to-impact, delivery speed, change stability, AI adoption with governance, and developer satisfaction. This is a high-leverage role where architectural decisions shape the daily workflows of thousands of engineers.
In this role, you will:
- Lead architectural direction for the Internal Developer Portal (IDP), including service catalog governance, plugin ecosystems, and extensibility models
- Architect AI-enabled workflows that integrate enterprise LLM capabilities into engineering systems with governance, auditability, and contextual grounding
- Design scalable backend services and APIs powering onboarding, documentation, metadata management, automation, and workflow orchestration
- Integrate AI systems safely with identity, authorization, and enterprise data boundaries, implementing guardrails, telemetry, and evaluation frameworks
- Extend intelligent workflows into CLI and local development environments to increase self-service adoption
- Design orchestration layers that connect templates, services, CI/CD pipelines, and automation workflows to reduce manual coordination
- Create reusable enablement patterns and golden paths that reduce onboarding and service creation variance
- Ensure documentation systems are structured, discoverable, and AI-ingestible to improve contextual linking across the engineering ecosystem
- Integrate engineering intelligence signals into workflows, tying platform capabilities to measurable improvements in delivery speed and quality
- Establish reliability, observability, and operational standards for distributed enablement services
- Lead architectural hardening and production reliability initiatives for shared platform systems
- Mentor engineers and elevate architectural rigor across Engineering Enablement
Experience and Qualifications
Required:
- Significant experience designing and operating distributed systems in production environments
- Demonstrated ownership of architecture for shared platforms, developer systems, or internal enablement infrastructure
- Proficient expertise in API design, service architecture, and scalable backend systems
- Experience integrating complex systems across identity, authorization, and enterprise security boundaries
- Experience influencing technical direction across multiple teams and stakeholder groups
- Deep understanding of production reliability, observability, and operational excellence
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience
Preferred:
- Experience building or evolving an Internal Developer Portal (IDP) or developer enablement systems
- Experience integrating AI/LLM-based capabilities into governed enterprise workflows
- Experience building developer CLIs or extending intelligent systems into local development environments
- Experience designing extensibility frameworks, plugin ecosystems, or marketplace models
- Experience operationalizing engineering intelligence metrics to drive measurable platform improvements
